Monday was Maths Day at Manor! And what a day filled with Maths it was!
Look at some of the great costumes children in 5G wore for the
Maths Day Costume Parade.
In our Maths investigation we had the digits1 - 9 and a 3x3 grid. The aim was to make 15: horizontally, vertically and diagonally. It scrambled many brains! Some of us still think it is impossible to do!
One of our activities were to become a 'human graph'. We created a shoe graph in class to begin with. The different categories were: shoes with laces, shoes with velcro and laces, shoes with velcro and shoes that didn't fit any of the categories. Using this information we drew the bar graphs in our journals.
The second graph we created was voted for in class and it was all about the number of siblings in our families. For this, we created a line graph. The number of siblings in our class ranged from 1 to 6!
Unfortunately, the day had to come to an end.
We read Math Curse as our Maths story.
It seemed like each day in this book was truly a curse.
A Math Curse.
A Kahoot! quiz was assigned to us. Fastest responder with the correct answer made it to the top of the podium!
5G's Winner: Hashim
In teams, we also learned how to play a game of dominoes. At first, it was a bit confusing, but once we got the hang of it, there was no stopping us.
This half-term the children were working on designing their own websites. As we were learning about Earth and Space, they used Google Sites to build and design their own site, with the knowledge they've acquired.
Below are sneak previews of what some of their Home Pages look like.
On Monday we visited the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. It was a great learning experience (even though the toughest part of the day was climbing up the hill)!
We had a workshop teaching us more about Earth and Space.
There was also a self-led activity which we completed after watching a short educational clip. Filling in parts of the crossword was quite tricky, so we teamed up and worked together.
Last but not least we visited the Planetarium to watch Universe on your Doorstep.
This was a fantastic experience indeed!
Now that we have mastered adding fractions, we had a go at subtracting fractions. This was our very first go. Have a look at some of the solutions, thinking and methods.
Another week filled with learning!
This week Floella continued to take us on her journey. We learned more about what her school life was like and what these educational experiences suggested about the ways in which Britain continued to influence the Trinidadian society.
We also looked at the lyrics of each of the songs that were routinely sung as part of Floella’s early schooling:
Once we finished our independent writing in English, it was time for a new adventure. And an adventure we have got indeed.
Have you ever read Cosmic by Frank Cottrell-Boyce?
The first 40 pages got us hooked!!!
In Maths we continued to develop and build our confidence in fractions. Finding, comparing and ordering equivalent fractions are no challenge for us anymore!
Maths on the floor? Why not?
Maths Boosters, yes please. We are always up for a game or 2 or 3!
Want to try out one of our spelling activities?
Guess the word before the potion explodes.
In our unit session this week, we quickly recapped significant dates from the period where the Romans left Britain and the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings invaded.
We used this map to label the seven kingdoms of Anglo-Saxon Britain.
An interesting week this was...
On Tuesday some children were at home, celebrating Eid with their families. To further celebrate Eid the children had a party on Friday afternoon where they played a few party games and shared some food.
We also spent the whole of Wednesday learning about Earth and Space. We started the morning off by looking at the different planets in the solar system. NASA's website had a lot of interesting information about each planet. It was interesting to see where we fit in the solar system.
We then had a challenge, trying to build a scaled version of the solar system. We did this in the playground and in the hall. We were all surprised at the distances between some of the planets.
Can you work out what we used to represent each of the planets?
Back in class we put our computing skills to the test; creating different types of graphs using Google Sheets. The graphs represents the diameter of each planet.
Children explored Sheets and had a go at different types of graphs. They looked at the graphs and interpreted them.
What information can you get from these charts?
In pairs children constructed their own solar system mobiles. These were not just any mobiles. We looked at where exactly the planets were on Wednesday (with the help of NASA) and plotted our planets around the sun.
On Tuesday, Year 5's had a Portals into the Past workshop, explaining and teaching some of Britain's history. The children specifically looked at the Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and Normans.
They looked at different artefacts, items and weapons of the time.
They also participated in different battles, wedding ceremonies (and quick divorces) and traditional games.
It was a great, memorable day!
In Reading we started looking at the book 'Coming to England' by Floella Benjamin.
This story links to our curriculum unit: What does it mean to be British?
In Maths we started on a new Chapter. For the next couple of weeks it is all about fractions, fractions and more fractions!
Beginning to think about
What it means to be British? took us through a series of events in British history.
We looked and discussed the countries that form Britain.
We also watched videos on migration which included the Windrush Generation.
