Year 6 had an amazing time designing and creating their own bread for our DT project. Children learnt about different types of bread and the cultures and regions from which they originate. They learnt about the ingredients of bread and how they may be used. They then create their own bread recipes and develop ideas. The children will then make and bake their own bread.
Part of our unit on Seeking Refuge children reflected on our school thread of ‘Decision Making’ by exploring how a lack of power and representation can result in discrimination and exclusion. They related this to the current immigration situation in the UK and created posters.
Children look at different electrical circuits. They had the opportunity to predict how bright the bulbs will be in each circuit and place them in order of brightness. Using the equipment given to them, they construct the circuits shown in the diagrams and test their predictions before explaining what they observed.
Children made a huge effort in dressing up for World Book Day. We had so many different characters for their favourite books. The day was spent enjoying reading and discussing our favourite books. In the afternoon Year 6 spent time reading to Year 1 children. Both sets of children thoroughly enjoyed the experience. A huge thank you to parents and carers for your continued support.
This week year 6 started looking at artwork from the Second World War. We looked at the work of Henry Moore (1898-1986) who was one of Britain’s greatest sculptors, yet it was his drawings of Londoners sheltering from the Blitz that made him famous. Children created drawings using pencils, charcoal and chalk to replicate their own versions of Moore's work.
Year 6 made a huge contribution to the Manor Marathon. Our Spring fundraiser proved to be very successful. Children loved dressing up in their most colourful sports outfits and played a huge role in completing the 26 mile total distance. Well Done!
We went to the Tate and Lyle Factory based near the London City Airport to take part in the Junior Citizen Scheme. This is a partnership initiative aimed at giving young children the skills to deal with a wide range of emergency situations, and to enable them to make a valued contribution to their local community through good citizenship.
The session covered short interactive sessions with trained members of the society on the following:
Personal Safety
Street Smarts
Recycling
Online Safety
Fire hazards
Drugs and alcohol
Water safety
The children found the experience very useful.
Children have been using Sphero as part of their computing lessons. They learnt to use the coding robots to instruct it to draw shapes and navigate through mazes. The activities encourage exploration, imagination, and perseverance.
As part of our Unit on Seeking Refuge Year 6 visited the Imperial War museum. Children had the opportunity to explore the new Second World War Galleries, which looks at the human side of a conflict that affected millions of people around the world. Through the stories of real people from across the globe, children discovered the causes and consequences of the Second World War.
In our new science unit on electricity children spent time looking at electricity around us. They spent the afternoon investigating static electricity from separating salt and pepper with a balloon to making paper jump. The children had a fantastic time.
