Reading is an integral part of our curriculum and something that our tamariki engage with daily in a variety of ways. Key reading skills in the first 6 months include decoding using decodable texts (short vowels, consonants, digraphs), recognising high-frequency words, and connecting sounds to letters.
In term one our key focus areas are:-
Exploring a wide range of texts through shared Reading and individual reading based on the BSLA programme
Recognising letter sounds, rhyme, and sentence structure
Broadening vocabulary
Use these video's to help practise and learn some tricky words that we cannot easily sound out.
HFW (High Frequency Word Lists)
These lists of words that are very useful for your child to be able to recognise and read quickly. The more words they know by sight the easier reading will be. Please try and practise these words each night alongside home reading. Start at List one and work on just a few words at a time. Once your child shows confidence in remembering the first words choose the next few to add into the learning. As your child begins to know lots of these words point to them in a random order to ensure they know them well and have not just memorised the list!
Thank you for your ongoing support in your child’s learning.
