The USM School of Nursing developed this model in 2019 to bring greater consistency to our lab and clinical sections and to provide mentorship and teaching support to part-time faculty. All labs and clinicals have a course lead faculty, and some didactic lectures (as needed) may also have a course lead. Course lead faculty serve as content area experts for the course they lead, collaborating closely with the Netty Provost and Leslie Larsen.

Course Lead Faculty work closely with the Undergraduate Coordinators (Netty & Leslie).
Course Lead Duties:
Create course syllabi and ensure all faculty are using the most current syllabi, policies, clinical letters, and clinical performance appraisal tools as needed. Syllabi are based on the USM template and the nursing curriculum as designed by the curriculum committees. Include holiday and vacation dates per semester.
Support for faculty teaching in the lead areas with a monthly check-in. This may involve orientation to the course, course development, and assignments aligning with course objectives, Lab or clinical planning, and orientation. Facilitating specific community sites, computer training, and badge access, etc.
Create/establish assignments appropriate to course objectives that could be given to students who have to miss a lab or clinical due to COVID quarantine or waiting on COVID test results, or student overload rotation.
Clinical course leads establish standards for pre- and post-clinical expectations.
In conjunction with the Undergraduate Coordinators:
Collaborate on faculty teaching assignments as needed.
Respond to faculty concerns regarding student progress and work closely with the coordinators to address student progression concerns within relevant courses.
Provide feedback regarding clinical sites fit for student education.
Leads to meet/Zoom two times a semester with Coordinators. Summer and winter communications may be required.
Faculty Course Leads Are Not Expected To:
Be available for immediate contact outside of regular business hours.
Cover courses when other faculty can’t attend a regularly scheduled course.
Be responsible for finding coverage for faculty who can’t attend a regularly scheduled course.
Provide remediation to students for whom they are not the faculty of record.
