You may have seen Turnitin in your courses, as a plagiarism checker on assignments, but what if you could catch potential similarities before you even submit your assignment? And, what if you could check your citations and grammar at the same time?

Turnitin's new tool does just that--coaching you through your drafting process, and helping with proofreading, so you can be confident in your assignment submissions!

Using Draft Coach in combination with the brainstorming, ideating, synthesizing, and organizing that the Writing Center tutors offer will ensure that you are always presenting your best self, in written work.

You Can Use Draft Coach in Either Google Docs OR Word!

Draft coach is only avaliable through the online Microsoft Office 365, and Google Drive instances--your your first step in utilizing this tool is to get up and running with your platform of choice (if you are not already). Let's take a look at how to do that--if you already use these online tools--scroll down for Draft Coach use instructions.

Access Word through OneDrive on your mycampus portal.

All UMPI students, faculty, and staff have access to Microsoft Office 365 apps, through OneDrive. Click on the OneDrive app, and then select Word from the waffle menu in the top left.

You can now start a new Word document, upload a document you have on your desktop, or select an existing Word doc to receive Draft Coach writing coaching.

Access Docs through Drive on your mycampus portal.

All UMPI students, faculty, and staff have access to Google Workspace apps, through Drive. To access Google Docs, select the Drive Icon, and then select Docs from the Drive waffle menu in the top right.

You can now start a new Doc document, upload a document from your desktop, or select an existing Doc to receive Draft Coach writing coaching.

1.Open your your Word draft

From your OneDrive account in the portal, open Word, and select or upload the document your wish to check.

From your Google Drive account in the portal, open Docs, and select or upload the document your wish to check.


2. (the first time only) Get the Draft Coach Add-on

Open Add-ins in the Insert ribbon to search the 365 Store for Draft Coach

2. Open the Extension menu

On the Doc editing ribbon, open the Extensions menu. Note: Turnitin Draft Coach has automatically been added to your extensions.

3. Select Turnitin

After adding Draft Coach, a Turnitin option will now appear on your Insert menu

3. Select Turnitin Draft Coach Add-on

From the Extension menu, scroll down until you see Turnitin Draft Coach. Click or hover to open options.

4.Open Draft Coach

With the Turnitin option selected, click Draft Coach. This will open the Draft Coach panel.

Select Turnitin Draft Coach. This will open the Draft Coach panel.

5.Run Reports

Select which report you would like to run; Grammar, Citations, or Similarity. Note, you can run Similarity up to 3 times on any Draft.
