Seville, Spain

Spring 2023, 6 weeks in Seville, Spain

Meet Ben!

Major: Marketing

Minor: Spanish

I really enjoyed the city of Sevilla itself and the warm, sunny weather. The city was very walkable and fun to explore. I traveled across Spain to Ronda, Madrid, Barcelona, Granada, Córdoba, Cádiz, Valencia, and more.

Program type: Faculty led (COWA- classroom host)

Most time spent in: Seville, Spain

Length: 6 weeks

Semester/Year: Spring 2023

Year at GVSU when studied abroad: between Sophomore and Junior year

Background

I preferred to have a faculty-led program with other GVSU students. I also wanted a program that wasn't a whole semester but not something that would only be two weeks. Studying abroad in this program would allow me to get six credits for my minor while having a great experience in another country.

Example Day

(Typical weekday with no events/plans) Wake up 8am, breakfast prepared for me and my roommate (toasted bread, butter, ham, and orange juice), shower, head to class at 9am-12pm, hang out with classmates until 2pm, lunch at home, afterwards time to explore the city and walk around or relax for a siesta since most businesses were closed from 2pm-5pm (I personally walked around and explored the city on my own, I really liked the Parque Maria Luisa since it was close to where I was living and COWA), return home in evening and have dinner at 8pm, work on homework in the evening

Reflection

I didn't really know what to expect. The overall experience was great because I got to see so many cool things outside of class. The Spanish language and Sevillian accent were very difficult to understand. I wish I had planned my mini weekend trips more in advance although I still saw a lot.

Challenges/Advice/Recommendations

I would say just be open to new experiences. Whatever situation you are facing, try to make the most of it. Studying abroad really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. A majority of my best memories are from experiences outside the classroom.
