Bilbao, Spain

4 months in Bilbao, Spain

Meet Braden!

I am a double major in secondary education and Spanish with a teachable minor in psychology. I loved staying with my host family, hanging out with my friends in the program, and going around Bilbao. At Grand Valley, I have been a part of Met By Love, a Christian organization on campus. In my free time, I enjoy running and weightlifting in my free time and spending time with friends. I had a great experience when I studied abroad! I was able to meet a bunch of other American students and make some great moments abroad.

Program type: Partnership with University of Deusto (CIDE Program)

Most time spent in: Bilbao, Spain

Length: 4 months

Semester/Year: Winter 2023

Year at GVSU when studied abroad: Junior year

Background

I heard that Grand Valley had a good partnership with this program in Spain. I had a fantastic experience going to this partner university. It was recommended to me by the Padnos International Study Abroad center.

Example Day

In the morning, I would wake up and have some cereal in the morning on my own in my host family's home. I would leave and walk about 10 minutes to the university building and have two classes. Afterward, I would go back to my host family for lunch and have a nice big meal with them. We all would take a nap after the meal, and usually the whole town would have this limbo time in the afternoon when people would be taking a siesta. Sometimes I  would have maybe one afternoon class, but after that I would take a 15 minute walk to go to the gym and walk through a park in the city on my way home. Usually then, I would have time in the evening to be with friends, host family, or traveling around.

Reflection

I think that the study abroad was what I was expecting for the most part. I think my expectation of what the study abroad experience would be like was correct, but I hadn't prepared myself fully for what life was truly going to be like. When time was building up to the time of leaving the country [the US], I remember being dropped off at the airport and thinking, "Wow, I really am about to do this." I think if I were to go back, I would have allowed myself to explore a little more and go out to do activities during the week with my friends. At times I would stay home and have some personal time, do homework, watch a movie, or hang out with my host sibling. Overall, I have no regrets at all, but maybe I could have been a little more spontaneous or adventurous.

Advice/Recommendations

My advice would be to value rest by truly being present, and enjoying the moment. There was a few weeks span that I did traveling out of the country and everything felt very fast-paced, and almost in a rushing manner. Sometimes it's hard to be present right where you are when you are thinking about travel plans or what needs to get done. At the end of the day, when having a study abroad experience, it's important to enjoy, rest, live in the moment, and be glad to be where you are. My recommendation would be to push yourself outside of your comfort zone, in where you would maybe go somewhere, try something new, or hang out with people you may not know all that well. Don't push yourself until you feel burnt out and you have lost yourself in the process of trying to enjoy experiences, so take care of your personal emotional and mental health in everything you do.
