Buenos Aires, Argentina

2 months in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Meet Caitlin!

Nursing major and minor in Spanish. My favorite part about studying abroad was the complete immersion. Having to lean on my Spanish increased it immensely! I love to travel, serve people, play volleyball, and anything active.

Program type: External public health program with CIEE (more information about this program here)

Most time spent in: Buenos Aires, Argentina

Length: 2 months

Semester/Year: Spring/Summer 2022

Year at GVSU when studied abroad: Between Junior and Senior year

Background

I chose CIEE’s public health program because I wanted to step foot into a hospital in Argentina. I wanted to combine my love for nursing and Spanish.

Example Day

Wake up and eat breakfast with host mom, take the subway to class, have class, go out and eat lunch with students, take subway to hospital, connect with medical students from argentine university and shadow them, then walk around the city and sight see that afternoon and evening, go home and eat with host mom, hit a fun skyline bar with new friends or watch a movie/soccer with host mom.

Reflection

It was better than what I expected. I wouldn’t change anything about my experience. It is easy to hang out with other Americans and speak english while you’re with them. I encourage everyone who goes abroad to try and become friends with locals so that you’re encouraged to get more immersed and speak in Spanish more often.

Advice/Recommendations

It’s worth the money and more often than not it will be cheaper all things considered than a semester at GVSU. You won’t regret it. You can always travel to countries but it’s hard after school to get immersed in a country. Immersion is way better than vacation-especially for your language too.

Top tip from Caitlin: Stop in any time to the GVSU Padnos International Center (Study Abroad Office). The people at PIC get paid to help you find a program! They will find a program that you’re looking for.. there’s 100’s and 100’s of options.
