Art & Archives: A London Experience

Bloomsbury Boys

Welcome to our Bloomsbury Adventure!

From December 28, 2022, through January 16, 2023, a group of students from California State University, Fresno from a broad range of disciplines explored London through the perspective of Bloomsbury. The Bloomsbury Group was a fellowship of English writers, philosophers, and artists. Notable members of the group included Virginia Woolf, Vanessa Bell, Roger Fry, John Maynard Keynes, and Duncan Grant. There also included many peripheral members of the group, such as T.S. Eliot, Sigmund Freud and Pablo Picasso. Through the group's philosophical discussions and publications, Bloomsbury became associated with an aesthetic akin to the modernist movement.  By reading various texts, such as Three Guineas, Vision and Design, and Letters from London, studying Bloomsbury ephemera in numerous archives, attending art exhibitions and theatrical productions, and (literally) walking in the steps of members from The Bloomsbury Group, we gained a deeper insight into the impact of Bloomsbury in art, literature, philosophy, economics, and beyond.
