Correspondences with Mulk Raj Anand

While in the British Library, I was fascinated with the scale of this library. It was much larger than the libraries back in Fresno. In this library I discovered documents written by Mulk Raj Anand, an influential Indian writer that wrote of the Indian caste system in English. In my encounter with the Mulk Raj Anand documents, I observed that the letters were delicate and easily torn. The aroma emanating from the pages had a vintage quality, reminiscent of old books from a bygone era. I also came across postcards that resembled the ones available in stores today. These materials provided insight into Anand's intentions and writing style, particularly with regard to the impact of his documents on India's caste system. The primary letters revealed aspects of Anand's personality that cannot be easily gleaned from online sources. This reminds me of the quote from "The Little Plays of Mahatma Gandhi" on page 62 where he writes "My only claim to any kind of greatness, if at all, is that I am a servant of the masses, and if I have done anything, I have done it only because it has been my duty. It gave me the ability to reflect on Gandhi's humility and dedication to serving others, which were key aspects of his personality. Overall, Gandhi's quote and his opposition to the caste system reflect his commitment to serving others and fighting for social justice, which are key aspects of his influential significance.  Although the process of reserving a manuscript online beforehand was initially cumbersome, the actual experience of retrieving and utilizing the documents in the reading room was well worth it. The vast space and abundant resources of the reading room enabled me to thoroughly sift through all the documents and letters. This encounter provided me with a newfound appreciation for the value of library resources. I am eager to explore the library's 11 other reading rooms and delve into their vast collection of scientific and medical texts. Overall, learning about the prolific individual who influenced an entire nation through his writing was an incredibly enriching experience.
