Comprehensive Portfolio
(Gifted Program)
Comprehensive Portfolio Overview
The Comprehensive Portfolio is an exit requirement for degree-seeking students in the gifted program.
Students entering prior to Fall 2020: Please see the information on the Comprehensive Portfolio (High Incidence Program).
You will begin building your portfolio at the beginning of your program (instructions included below) and finalize and submit the completed portfolio towards the end of your program. The Comprehensive Portfolio can be submitted in the Spring and Fall semesters while you are taking the SPED 859 course. The portfolio will consist of the following four sections:
Why? Program Philosophy & Goals
Who? Definition & Identification Process
What, Where, When? Instruction/Curriculum
Program Evaluation
Collect artifacts you have developed throughout the gifted program. There are four different sections that include 3-5 subsections each. You can use the evaluation rubric (see Rubric) to revise your artifacts before the final submission.
You will use Google Sites (https://sites.google.com/) to create your comprehensive portfolio. There will be four different menus on your portfolio. Please introduce yourself on the main page. Make sure the evaluators can access all artifacts on the portfolio when evaluating (not restricted links). You will have a full three weeks to finalize it.
*Important: As Google sites are open to the public, you will double-check whether the artifacts contain identifiable information (e.g., name, signature) of people you have worked with for the assignments. Please delete the information if there is any. Also, you must include the final versions of your artifacts that incorporate instructor feedback throughout the program. Make your artifacts accessible. If you attach any Google docs on the Google site, you must ensure that other people can access them.Once you are done with organizing your portfolio, you will work with your partner to provide a peer review. You will have one week to provide a review for your peer.
You will have another week to address the improvements your peer suggested.
Once you are done with the revisions, the program coordinators and gifted instructors will evaluate your work to determine if your comprehensive portfolio shows your competency as a gifted educator.
* If you have any questions about the comprehensive portfolio, email Dr. Sohyun Yang (s_yang12@fhsu.edu).
Signing up to Submit your Completed Comprehensive Portfolio
Toward the end of your program, you will need to decide when you will complete and submit your finalized comprehensive portfolio.
Degree-Seeking Candidates Only
If you are a degree-seeking candidate (in the master's program), you must sign up for comprehensive exams, which is the Comprehensive Portfolio, through the Graduate School website at the beginning of the semester in which you plan to submit your portfolio. Be sure to monitor deadlines for signing up for comprehensive exams on that same website, and watch for emails from your advisor with due dates and steps for your final semester.
Peer Review Process
Prior to submitting your portfolio, you will engage in a peer-review process with others who are also submitting their comprehensive portfolios. The purpose of this process is to help ensure your portfolio is ready for submission by verifying that each section is complete, all links work, and you are meeting the stated expectations. This also gives you a chance to network with colleagues in the program and to share your own accomplishments.
During the semester in which you plan to submit your portfolio - and after you have signed up (see instructions above), you will be assigned to a peer reviewer. Following the timeline provided by your advisor for the peer review process (watch for an email with instructions), you will share your portfolio with your peer, and your peer will share their portfolio with you. Using the Peer Review Form, you will review your peer's portfolio, emailing your peer your feedback. Your peer will review your portfolio and email you the completed Peer Review Form. You will share both your and your peer's forms when submit the final portfolio for grading.
