Hello Autumn!
It's officially the autumn season! Even though fall began sometime around September, did it truly felt like the season? And October has its focus mainly on Halloween. BOO! Oops, no hard feelings because now that November is here, let's get into the season of gratitude! The weather in SF is funny, but we love it! Well...sometimes, I guess it depends on our mood. Anyway, you can finally start getting out those long coats, and fully switch to warm colors for the season! We hope you enjoy this issue, and wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Warm regards,
Lucy Su
Vice President of Public Relations

-Kyle, Year 1
"Unity Day was super fun! I was able to meet a lot of new people, learn about new opportunities, and it was the first time I've seen this many people gathered around together once again after the pandemic."
-Kelly, Year 1
"They had a very good sandwich...I like the little spice to it."

A Note from the Vice President of Inter-Club Council: “I want thank everyone that participated in or attended Unity Day on Thursday. It was so wonderful to see the many faces that make up the CCSF community. It is events like this, which stimulates growth and social interactions, that really bring all of us together. And all the blood, sweat, and tears experienced when preparing for this event immediately paled in the face of all the joy and positive energy bursting throughout Unity Day — a special thanks to George Dela Pena Martiniano for being the best DJ that we could ask for. The Inter-Club Council and the Associated Students of Ocean Campus are so proud to represent the vibrant, amazing students of CCSF, and we encourage everyone to reach out to one another, discover the resources, programs and other opportunities like this offered within this community so we can best support each other in working towards our goals and passions, together!”

CCCSAA: Student Leadership Conference 2022:
Thank you to the student leaders of the Associated Students Executive Council; Student Trustee Malinalli Villalobos, Student Chancellor Heather Brandt, Student Vice-Chancellor Naomi Heinen, ASC of Downtown Center Senator Haewon (Helen) Byun & ASC of Ocean Campus President My (Amelia) Khong alongside Advisor Amy Coffey that represented the students of City College of San Francisco at the CCCSAA (California Community College Student Affairs Association) Student Leadership Conference that was held from October 21st, 2022 - October 23rd, 2022 in San Diego. The theme for this conference was entitled Your Turn: Learn, Lead, Advocate based on Keynote speaker & New York Times bestselling author Julie Lythcott-Haim's book. (Pictured below from left to right with Student Trustee Malinalli Villalobos, AS President of Ocean campus Amelia (My) Khong and Student Chancellor Heather Brandt. Leaders and representatives from 116 California Community Colleges were in attendance and were able to pick from the 40 workshops offered across a wide variety of topics. The event also featured an Advocacy Academy. Conference Highlights for me were: How to Build Power & Interrupt White Supremacy in Leadership, Understanding your Leadership Style and How to be Agents for Change.
Insight of student leadership conference 2022:
Here are some short commentaries from the student leaders about their experience at the conference:
Student Vice chancellor Naomi Heinen:
One of the key things that I took away from the workshops I attended at the conference was the importance of independent, individual thought and how that could be integrated with a community mindset. The important thing when developing an individual identity in leadership is to understand yourself, your own values and beliefs and what you stand for, and be able to speak against something that seems unethical from your own lens. However, while doing that, we also need to be mindful of the shared environment we inhabit. We need to make space for others to counter our opinions with their own. This should allow us to cultivate a space where we can best work towards a shared vision of the future. The key to effective leadership spaces is the balance between these two ideas - the individual and community.
Student Chancellor Heather Brandt:
I think it is important to note that being a leader isn’t easy & leadership can be messy, but we keep going, learning & growing, pushing our educational system to be better, out of a deep desire for change, a fierce commitment to our commUNITY & a real love like no other. The true heroes in this story are our very own commUNITY of students, without whom none of this would be possible. I am always so grateful for the responsibility students have entrusted us with as your elected & appointed leaders. I want to thank our students for the opportunity to attend & represent them! There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t reflect upon my purpose for joining leadership... Know that you are always my WHY! I can only hope that I make you all as proud as you make me!
Student Trustee Malinalli Villalobos:
The California Community College Student Affairs Association (CCCSAA) Student Leadership Conference held in San Diego, CA was an exceptional one. I had the opportunity to attend various workshop sessions, ranging from "Interrupting White Supremacy in Leadership" to "Diversity Equity Inclusion Accessibility (DEIA)," where I was able to learn from the presenters and participants (student lesders) from throughout CA. As well, had the opportunity to build community with other Student Trustees and Associated Student Councils and to share on the type of work and advocacy that we do in our respective campuses and districts.
AS President of Ocean Campus Amelia (My) Khong:
Be brave to tell your own story! Quiet cannot take action, especially when you are in places where you feel like you are small. If you are quiet, you are dismissed and student voices will not be heard. When you are saying things, you close the gap! Be Vocal!
