Year 4 - RANGITOTO
Carolyn J Galvin Inspired Landscapes
For a fun Friday, I wanted to experiment with an art style children dont often explore, Abstract. I wanted them to be able to paint and create more freely & use imagination with their strokes. The focus was 'paint mixing' from Primary colours / black and white. I'd seen another art teacher do this on instagram with great success so gave it a go. The children loved it! The result was very whimsical / earthy / rosy tones that can be viewed many ways. I love them especially as every time I look, I see something new. BEAUTIFUL! We even framed them like Gallery art and signed them like the artists we are!
Process:
Learning about colour theory
Mixing colours guide
Looking at landscapes and recreating our own with soft lines
Mixing paint from Primary, Black & White colours
Whimsical free brush strokes
Media: Tempera Paint & Chalk Pastel
Matisse Style Still Life Vases
Before school I needed some up & go for my own children, I walked into the dairy and there were such beautiful blooms everywhere! I decided to scrap my other lesson and create these flora and fauna with this class. They did not dissapoint! They created magic with colour and texture today! Absolutely stunning! Even better, the mess we made was EPIC!
Process:
Blending harmonious colours
creating texture with strokes
Balance with dual tone background
Symmetry with vases
Cutting skills- Flora and Fauna
Creating Shadow and highlight with oil pastel
Media: Tempera Paint, Felt tips, Chalk & Oil Pastel
Andy Warhol Inspired Birds of Aotearoa
A bright start to the week with these gorgeous birds. I believe there are art skills to learn beyond sketching, even though this is important. Today the children had a blast drawing over an image they found on Google and then learning how to transfer those lines by shading on the back and pressing to transferring it to a good piece of paper. Many were amazed how easy it was and said how many ways they could apply it to every day tasks they sometimes struggle with. The intricate details of going around each line in bold pastel and colour blocking made for a very fun and bright day!
Process:
redrawing a detailed image
Learning how to image transfer
Creating bold text
oil pastel detail
Colour blocking with dye
Media: Permanent Marker, Oil Pastel & Dye
Indian Inspired Watercolour Mandala Collage
Inquiry this term is about Cultural Celebrations, Mandalas hold a significant place in Indian culture and for good reason, theyre simply stunning! We took a process to create intricate designs and learnt more about symmetry too! It's not often your teacher asks you to keep all your rubbish scraps, this was a great learning opportunity about making use of our unwanted pieces and putting them to good use. We tried to create balance / Harmony between + and - space too!
Process:
Warm and cool colour chat
look at tie-dye effect
cutting semettrical patterns- just like creating snowflakes
Juxtaposing the two contrasting colours together to create symmetry and definitive detailing in a single artwork
vivid lines for added dimension
Media: Dye, Wax crayon & Permanent Marker
