I dont know about you, but when I think about iconic Aotearoa, I think BEACH. Its been a fantastic Kiwi summer and standing on one in East Auckland this weekend, I was reminded how being there, with the sea breeze, hearing childrens laughter in nearby playgrounds and some saussies on a BBQ makes it one of my favourite places to be! As winter approaches I wanted to reminisce on our awesome 2023/24 summer season.
Room 6 agreed that when you think of NZ in summer you cant beat a family beach trip!
We had so mych fun making these mixed media pieces today and everyone was awesome at giving it their best shot!
What a fun day to end an epic first term of CRT ART DAYS
Process:
painterly strokes like the Moana in blue, turquoise and white paint using the dip & flip method. No blending, letting all the hues shine through
Using tea bags to get a beachy sand colour to the bottom of an A3 page
Chalk pastel and a look at some amazing sunset colours, blending that out with our fingers using circular motions
ripping and collaging the blue paper with the white exposed part as wave caps
collaging paper boats from Magazines and old Wallpaper samplers
Adding sand and lastly paint blotting with scrunched tissue for sea spray !
Again to celebrate different cultures within our diverse school this term, the lovely teacher from Room 7 asked that I create something cultural for their assembly coming up.
I really love the rich culture of Japan and its beautiful monuments and native flora. I decided to be ambitious and create two pieces of art and combine them together (when they dry, because in this AKL weather, sometimes the sun is shy!)
I am so proud of this class, they really took such care today and were happy & proud of what they created. And their time management, well, amazing! Everyone was so on their game & got it done and worked independently so very well! Well done Year Twos!
Process:
Learnt about the Japanese Pagods, is symbolism and what it represents etc
Looked at Pagoda structures and learnt the basic shapes, we then created our own
Looked at colour theory and learnt about analogous colours & selected 2/3 that we wanted to use for our art - These are colours that are neighbours on the colour wheel e.g. red, orange, yellow & pink, purple, blue & green, yellow, orange etc
Smudged a blurred and beautiful gradient background with chalk pastels from the colours we chose
blew our cherry trees with indian ink and a flexi-straw to create lifelike twigs
added cherry blossoms by double dipping our paint to get a mixed effect and dabbing petals around and on our trees
coloured in our Pagodas with Water colour pencils using darker colours for shadows then using a wet brush to magically turn our pencil to watercolour paint! We loved this part !
added oil pastel of similar colours to add patterns & details and finally smudged with a cotton tip to soften the lines!
For presentation these will be glued to an A3 page side by side, but for now, they are photographed seperately & your child should recognise their own.
The Creative Process:
Media: Acrylic Paint, Chalk Pastel, Indian Ink, Poster Paint, Watercolour Pencil & Oil Pastels
As we are looking into culture and celebrations this term, this lovely class is looking at many amazing countries & we decided to do some art based around India this lesson.
I love the peacock and thought it was a beautiful bright bird that the kids would enjoy creating too, mainly because of the exquisite feathers and colours!
Symbolism: This national bird represents strength and power and its feathers symbolize immortality and immunity to evil. Peacock motifs in Indian art portray wealth and luxury items, similar to, clothing or jewellery. One can find this motif in religious art, such as Hinduism, which represents immortality
Process:
Created gradient (and learnt about it) for our painted paper
Used warm colours and smudged chalk pastel to create a soft blurred background
Drew components of the Peacocl - head, body, layered feathers & decorated.
This class is a total blast and always blow me away with their enthusiasm and creative flare! I Love these creations!

Our Take on Van Gogh's Sunflowers
This weekend I was given the most beautiful bunch of flowers which made me just want to paint beautiful tones of the rainbow. I also remember as year two at Cockle Bay School, I was given an amazing opportunity to be in an Art Extension Programme, we painted this very picture. My whole life my Mother treasured it and it was one of my most fond memories of success as a young'in. When I showed Room 9 today, they all said "ohhhhhhhh wow, are we going to do that?!" So I knew I was in for a class that were commited from the get go! They did not dissapoint.
We looked at proportion, correct ways to hold brushes, their care, and the 'dip and flip' method of painting that I learnt off an amazing Art Teacher on Instagram! This class was a delight and created Magic in their strokes today!
Process:
Look and chat about Teacher Model
Guided drawing with room for individualisation in the flower/ leaf shape and placement
Acrylic lining with fine brushes in black
Warm vs cool colour selection for table and background.
Dip&Flip method to create texture, highlight and shadowed areas
