Ramadan Mubarak Mosques
We currently have many children at MPS Celebrating Ramadan Mubarak and I wanted to create something that reflects this rich and amazing culture & our students who are part of it. I thought, peaceful, joy, and unity when planning it and knew Friday had to be MESSY! So we used paint, watercolour (liquid) and Chalk pastels
Not many children, or myself knew much about this cultural celebration, so it was awesome learning a bit about it beforehand!
Process:
Creating 4 layers - desert / landscape re-creation
painting with one colour (blue, purple, burgandy or orange) and tinting it with white to create a monotone landscape
watercolour x2 A4 pages of warm and cool colours in any way they choose to self express & or mix
Cut watercolour pages out in the shapes that make Mosques, and build something visually satisfying with the warm and cool tones
use oil pastel of a shade darker than their colour and smudge upwards to create a shadow effect
place a cresent moon and stars in the sky and add shadows
Paste mosque in a middle area, okay if to one side and layer it to create a dense and multi levelled Mosque
decorate with paint pens
Trace shape of mosque window and smudge out black chalk for a blurred effect
Catherine Rayner Bunnies
As Easter is fast approaching I wanted to depict Catherine Rayners amazing watercolour bunnies. Ive seen this done so many times so I had to have a go at it! I knew I didn't have long in room 10 this week so I knew this would be a fantastic way to spend 1/2 a day.
Look at how beautifully they created these these cheeky, full-of-life buns!
Process:
Guided drawing of Catherine Rayners style rabbit
outline with paint pens
rubbing soft tonal backgrounds using chalk pastels in monochromatic ways
Painting the bunnies using the dip&flip method- two paint colours on the brush and short painterly strokes to get lots of colour and texture
outlining with pastel and adding shadows and highlights back in with paint pens
Media: Pastel, Paint and Pen
SUNSET SUNRISE SILHOUETTE AFFIRMATIONS
This class has been learning about being Bucket Fillers during the start of this year, to create a positive class culture. We looked at things we can say to others, and even affirmations for ourselves to promote happiness inside and out. These sunsets/ Sunrises symbolise the start of a new day and setting how we want our day to go, or reflecting at the end of a day how it went. Children chose a setting that made them feel happy, or brought back a memory. Including an affirmation for them to use for years to come.
Process:
Warm and cool colour chat
painting in one back and forth motion
blending paint colours to create a sunset
creating a horizon line & forground - looking at size and scale
oil pastel and paint pen for details and highlights
Media: Mix of Tempera / Acrylic Paint, Oil Pastel & Paint Markers
CHINESE MING VASE STILL LIFE
Through inquiry this term, we will be looking at Cultural Celebrations and significance. I loved the idea of these cherished Porcelain from the Ming Dynasty Era. They give the perfect amount of detail for a beautiful still life piece.
Process:
Learning about 1 point perspective to give the illusion of depth
adding white to primary / secondary colours to create muted/ pastel tones
warm and cool colours chat
choosing colours that work well together
adding texture to wet paint
blending oil pastels of blue hues
scratching off paint to reveal our colour under the vase
blowing indian ink with straws for realistic twigs
scrunching and gluing crepe paper for dimensional cherry blossoms
Media: Tempera Paint, Indian Ink, Oil Pastel & Crepe paper
