Complete 1 sheet of "The Cool Bean".

The Cool Bean

This Exercise will introduce topographical lines, a.k.a. "contour lines", that we can draw on shapes to give them a sense of form and 3 dimensions.

Objective:

Visually communicate three dimensions

Use contour lines to show topographies

  • Draw a kidney bean shape in the lower right corner of the page

  • Now, take 1.5 minutes to fill the page with puddle-like shapes . Make sure that you make puddles of different sizes and shapes. You can make some thinner or fatter.

To create a contour line, we will first choose a profile of our shape. We'll start with the upper profile (in red)

Then, We will mirror this profile inside the bean to show the contour of the bean lengthwise.

Then, we can choose another profile, preferably one that we can use perpendicularly to our first contour line, like the top profile (in red)

...and we can create two more contour lines by mirroring the top profile along our bean. Our bean is now beginning to show more three dimensionality

By Creating only 3 lines, we have given our 2D puddle a sense of 3D beaniness!

Take 2 minutes to draw in contour lines on your beans. If you have extra time, decorate your kidney bean with a cap and cool shades.
