Spanish 1 introduces the basic language skills of showing, viewing, listening, reading, speaking and writing in Spanish. Students will learn the vocabulary and grammatical structures necessary to communicate in everyday situations. A variety of videos, student presentations, projects, and dramatizations will be used to reinforce language skills and introduce various aspects of Hispanic culture. As this is a high school level course, students should be prepared to invest additional time and effort as the curriculum demands. Recommended for students with a B+ average or better in English and who will devote 15 to 30 minutes to homework each night. *Students successfully completing high school courses in middle school will receive one high school credit, but the course grades will be excluded from the student’s high school grade point average (GPA).
Spanish for Spanish Speakers I & II

Prerequisite: Oral and written language proficiency test to determine level.
These courses are for students who already read and write in Spanish and will address the unique instructional needs of those students who have different levels of ability as native Spanish speakers. It will include reading and writing strategies to help students with STAAR, grammar, spelling, cultural features, and vocabulary enrichment. The course will also include some literature selections. This course will allow the student to become more proficient in both oral and written communication skills in Spanish. Much emphasis will be placed on increasing vocabulary and there will be a focus on improving reading and writing skills as well. Students will have an introduction to Hispanic literature. The student will be encouraged to grow bilingually in this multicultural world.
