Lee Mingwei is a contemporary artist born in 1964 in Taiwan. Currently, he lives between two art cities, Paris and New York. He got a degree in arts at the university of Yale in 1997. He exhibits some of his personal artworks in places like The Metropolitan Museum of Arts or The Museum of Modern Arts in New York.

Lee Mingwei tries to work on human contact and relationships. Most of the time, he speaks about moments of his past in his artworks. He also tries to include the audience in his projects, that can take different forms (installations, projections, role playing…). Even if he talks about his personal life, his artworks remain open to all, and everyone can identify to it. His work is focused on sharing and social contact.

This artwork, made in 2009 is called “The moving garden”. This artwork has been exposed in New York, Paris, Lyon… It’s an installation composed of a 13-meter long granit block and flowers which cross it. Lee Mingwei created this artwork after having read Lewis Hyde’s The Gift: Imagination and the Erotic Life of Property. It is an interactive project because it allows the audience to pick out the flowers and give them to other people. Each time, they put new and different flowers. We can say that this project is based on the same theme as many of his artworks, contact and relations between individuals.

This project, made in 1998 in New York, is based on the event of the death of Lee Mingwei’s grandmother. In the description of this artwork, he writes that he still had many things to say to her even though she was gone. So, he took the initiative to create this project on the theme of ”unspoken words”. The project takes form in three writing cabins made of wood and translucent glass, in which they put a table and a chair, and writing material. The audience could then enter the cabins and write letters that they had never written, or things they had never said. Then if they wanted to, they could hang them up on the slots on the wall of the booth, where later other people could read them. The purpose of this project was to allow people to express feelings, regrets or dreams, that they had been keeping inside, to sort of give them a chance to “free themselves” of this weight.

This is a simple installation of Lee Mingwei. This installation is composed of a long table, two chairs and a wall of colored coils. This installation allows the repair or mending by the artist of clothes or linens contributed by the visitors. Often these clothes have a sentimental value. The darned clothes are left behind : they accumulated gradually.

This work is a performance that has been made in Centre Pompidou. It is a musical representation, dedicated to any spectator. The singer walks through the centre, and offers a "gift" to the visitor, singing Shubert. Lee Mingwei came up with the idea when he treated his convalescent mother. Sonic Blossom shows what art can offer.
