How to begin and end a tutoring session

Standard

The tutor can begin and end the session based on the guidelines of the tutorial program as outlined in the job description; tutor training and tutor handbook, and can conduct a tutoring appointment appropriately.

Outcome

The tutor incorporates all of the elements of a beginning, middle and end of a tutoring session to include: an appropriate greeting; friendly demeanor; student-driven agenda; an active learning experience and an opportunity for the both the tutor and student to summarize the content; check for understanding; plan for follow-up sessions (if appropriate) and conclude with a positive statement.

The first time you sit down to help a student you may experience some amount of fear. This fear is a natural reaction for many tutors and may be due to your uncertainty about whether you are doing all that you are supposed to do as a tutor. For this reason, a tutoring process has been created to help you get started.

Establish rapport

Have a helpful attitude

Determine the tutoring session goal

Tutors should help students identify the tutoring session goal for themselves.

Determine what the student knows

"What have you done so far?"

"What do you already understand?"

"Can you explain this process?"

"What did you do on previous problems/papers/projects?"

Work on the goal

Don't forget to remind the student periodically what you are trying to accomplish!

Review

To assess the student's knowledge ✔

To torture the student with repeating something they found difficult X

To take up time during the tutoring session X

To analyze a student's explaining skills ✔

Conclude

After working with someone who has provided a service for you, what kind of conclusions have you heard that have made you feel comfortable? (ex. "Have a great day!")
