8.1 Teachers shall perform professional and traditional duties within reason as they are assigned that may include parent and student conferences; recordkeeping; course planning; grade level and faculty meetings; supervision duties; and school events. The District does not advocate excessive duties that would infringe upon family/personal time. In the event that a teacher has a concern that teacher may meet with the Superintendent to mediate the situation.
8.2 Duties will be no longer than 20 minutes, except in unique or emergency situations.
8.3 The district will make every effort to minimize the number of meetings requested during PE, World Language and Music time. If not in an administration requested meeting, this time should be used at the teacher’s discretion for lesson planning, unit design, collaboration, monitoring student achievement, and communication.
8.4 Each school year, schools that have an LUSD Special Day Class (SDC) and/or Resource Support Program (RSP) will be provided two days annually for the purpose of conducting IEP meetings during the school day. Two substitutes per day will be provided. One substitute for the SDC teacher and/or the RSP teacher and one roving substitute for the classroom teachers who are required to participate. The schedule will be agreed upon between the Director of Special Education and site administrator or the RSP teacher and site administrator.
8.5 The board shall adopt a school year calendar, which will govern the placement of duty days and vacation periods, after the LTA representatives have had the opportunity to make recommendations.
8.6 The work year shall include one hundred eighty (180) instructional days. Prior to the start of school, there shall be one (1) day for staff development sessions and two (2) days for classroom preparation, and three other staff development days throughout the school year for a total of one hundred eighty-six days (186). The first day of classroom preparation shall include up to two (2) hours for a school site meeting to be held between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Teachers will remain on their school sites the length of a regular instructional day the last day of school.
8.7 The regular duty hours for certificated staff members are one-half (1/2) hour before the commencement of his/her duty day.
8.8 The District is authorized to adjust the number of instructional minutes offered each day to meet the eligibility qualifications under Education Code section 46201. The District may also add instructional minutes in order to make up for any instructional time lost due to scheduled minimum days or unforeseen emergencies where school is dismissed early so that the District shall remain eligible under the provisions in Education Code section 46201 (a) and then reviewed through the negotiation process for further implementation.
8.9 The instructional teaching day shall include the following instructional minutes:
TK-3 (Regular Day) 290 minutes
4-8 (Regular Day) 310 minutes
TK-8 (Minimum Day) 195 minutes
8.10 Ten (10) Minimum Days will be devoted to curriculum development and design. (Minimum days are full teacher work days)
The teachers can choose from the following menu of options:
Individual teacher curriculum development.
Site grade level curriculum development.
Specific Training (For example, a teacher could choose to attend a “digital projector” training that was offered as a choice during a minimum day.)
District grade level meeting organized by a teacher guide. For example, could include a 6th grade science camp planning meeting. These would be teacher planned, initiated, and facilitated.
Four (4) teacher conference minimum days will be offered. There will be a total of 14 minimum days, mentioned above.
Three half-days (no more than one full day per semester) of teacher planning, assessment and/or report card preparation time will be provided to teachers. Teachers will work at their school site during these days. (Based on the availability of substitutes).

8.10.2 Three Days annually for Resource Teacher and Special Day Class teacher for the purpose of testing and/or IEP preparation (Based on
availability of substitutes).
8.11 Additional minimum days will be at the discretion of the district. The major purpose of these days will be professional development and collaboration opportunities for staff to support the District strategic plan.
8.12 Mandatory Staff Meetings
8.12.1 A principal will not schedule more than one (1) mandatory staff meeting per employee per week; the goal from start to end is one (1) hour. (If meetings last longer than one (1) hour, the LTA representative will meet with the principal to explore solutions.) Site administrators will make every effort to start staff meetings no later than 20 minutes after the regular duty day.
8.12.2 Ten (10) staff meetings per school year shall be devoted self-directed teacher preparation. These meetings shall be set by the principal with advanced notice to the teachers. A tentative schedule of staff meetings and self-directed meetings will be provided to teachers by September 1 of each year. The self-directed meetings will begin no later than 15 minutes after the regular duty day and be one hour in length.
8.12.3 MAA paperwork may be completed during staff meeting time.
