About John McCarthy

Hello! Thank you for checking out our William's Middle School STEAM page! I am thrilled to be teaching and developing this STEAM class at Williams Middle School.  For me, it's a convergence of my various experiences and passions.

Prior to coming to Williams Middle School I taught and developed science curriculum for 9 years at the Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter School for 7th and 8th grade.  At PVPA our team focused on developing a standards based grading system to support a growth mindset around student learning and assessment.  In addition we strove to integrate the arts and engineering within the science curriculum to provide multiple opportunities and ways for students to show their learning.

Prior to PVPA, I taught high school mathematics and physics, worked in elementary special education as a paraprofessional and led/supported multiple outdoor education programs, including helping middle school students build sea kayaks that they would paddle for a week up Lake Champlain.

I also worked at NAVSEA  as a computer scientist in submarine research/development and a researcher for the School of Marine Science and Technology (SMAST)   in oceanographic forecast modeling for the Gulf of Maine. As exciting as these jobs were though, my real enjoyment is in the classroom.

I feel very fortunate that I get to work as a STEAM teacher at Williams supporting the growth of all  of our innovative and curious middle school students!

Interests, Hobbies, Family

When  I am not busy tinkering with  STEAM curriculum, I enjoy hiking, riding bikes, being with my family and working on various build projects .

My Family! From left to right, Crystal, Rose, Hazel and Me. We love getting into nature and having adventures together!

I love riding all types of bikes and in all types of terrain. I also enjoy repairing and building bikes. Here is me my niece Maya enjoying a sunset ride.

Every year Crystal and I use our STEAM skills and build a holiday tree on a pier on Provincetown, MA. This year will be our 20th year!!!  That's me on the top of the tree securing the topper. A crane drops down the topper during a lighting ceremony jut after Thanksgiving.

The homemade boat race! My nephew and I racing a boat made out of trash found on the cape cod seashore. We took 1st place and yes that is me in a lobster costume!
