Research shows that homework at the elementary level is not an effective use of time, effort, or energy from students or teachers. In order to create time to spend on the most important activities, LCSD elementary schools use the following guidelines when assigning homework.
Homework should be assigned as follows:
20 minutes of reading K-2
30 minutes of reading 3-5
Short math practice up to 10 minutes in length
Students are allowed to have cell phones as long as they are kept powered off in their backpacks or in their teacher's safe designated space during the school day. Smart watches must be turned to school mode with no internet access or photo access during the school day. If students would like to call home using their watch during school hours, we ask that they come to the office to make the call. This allows better communication between the student and their teacher as well as at home.
The student will be given a warning the first time this policy is violated.
The second time the student will be asked to take their phone down to the office where it will be safely stored until the end of the day. The principal will then contact the parent to create an action plan together to make sure needs are being met.
If the policy is broken a third time the parent/guardian will need to come pick up their student's phone and will revise the plan previously created with the student, teacher, parent/guardian, and principal.
Parents may request exceptions to this policy for documented health or emergency reasons, including those reasons addressed through a 504 Plan or Individualized Education Plan. These requests should be submitted to the school principal.
Treats and snacks are allowed within the confines of the classroom under the teacher’s direction. Treats brought to school by the parents, if cleared with the teacher, must be purchased from a store and arranged to be given at a time which will not interfere with the regular school schedule.
On healthy air days and days when the weather permits, all students will be expected to go outside for school and class recesses. If your child needs to stay inside due to a medical condition, please send a note or contact the office. Students are welcome to bring labeled sports equipment that is going to be used safely and appropriately at recess. Equipment needs to be left in a backpack or given to their classroom teacher until used. We use http://air.utah.gov/ to determine what the air quality is.
The mission of Adams Elementary Media Center is to provide an enjoyable and welcoming place for students, teachers, and staff to find books, resources, and materials that will promote a love of reading and lifelong learning. This is the heart and soul of our school, a place where students can find enjoyable books to read and information that will help them become lifelong learners.
Media Center Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Students may checkout and return books during their weekly library class, after school and during the school day with permission from their classroom teacher. Books are checked out for 2 weeks at a time. The numbers of books students are allowed to check out are as follows: Kindergarten – 1 book and 1st - 5th grades - 2 books. Click on our school catalog to find out what books are available in our library.
Field trips must be organized and planned so they directly relate to the curriculum in an articulated and coordinated manner. They may be used to place a variety of civic, cultural, community, and business resources within reach of the classroom. Principal approval of all field trips is required. Notification of the field trip should be given to parents well in advance of the activity. Students who participate in field trip activities must have a district release form signed by a parent or legal guardian in order to participate. Parent or legal guardian approval by phone is not acceptable. All students are expected to purchase the sack lunch that is provided by the school unless they qualify for free lunch.
We advise parents to label all items that might be lost by children. “Lost and Found” items are hanging on coat hooks near the library. Unclaimed items will be donated to a charitable organization at the end of each month.
Please note that the school will not facilitate custodial visitations. It is a reasonable expectation that parents will work out visitation during non-school hours. Students will only be released to those custodians and emergency contacts in the student's profile (ID will be required). If you have concerns regarding custodial visitation or access, please contact the Principal regarding your situation.
School volunteers are an important part of the educational team and make a significant difference in the lives of students.
Volunteer- A person who donates services without pay or other compensation except for expenses actually and reasonably incurred as approved by the District. A volunteer may not donate any service to the District unless the volunteer's services are approved by the Superintendent or an authorized designee, and by the District's personnel office. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older. Individuals under the age of 18 who wish to volunteer must receive special permission from the principal and approval from the school leadership team.
Background Check- The process of looking up and compiling any criminal records of an individual.
Reference Check- The process of contacting former employers, to determine whether the volunteer candidate had any employment action or discipline taken against him/her for the physical or sexual abuse of a child.
Responsibilities and Expectations:
Volunteers shall -
Arrange childcare for younger than school-aged children away from the school in which you are volunteering. (Exceptions for isolated incidents may be made in the case of childcare cancellations. In this incident the young child should be quietly engaged in a seated activity near their parent volunteer.)
Devote undivided attention to the student(s) receiving interventions or additional focused instruction.
Schedule volunteer appointments with the teacher which will be recorded in the front office.
Unscheduled volunteer times may not be accommodated.
Volunteering is a Privilege -
"Volunteers must respect and contribute to the learning environment. At no time should their presence create a distraction for students and/or hardship/deterrent from work for employees."

Our mascot is the Owl and the school colors are Blue and White. We like to celebrate our school spirit on the last school day of every week by wearing school colors or school shirts.
Toys, including cards, are only allowed if a teacher permits them and must stay in the classroom. They are not allowed in hallways, the lunchroom, or playground.
Toys that become a distraction to learning may be taken away and returned at the teacher’s discretion. Repeated issues may result in a loss of toy privileges.
Gum is not allowed unless provided by a teacher and must stay in that classroom. Chewing gum in hallways, the lunchroom, or playground is not allowed.
