Culture and Language Series - In this course participants will not only learn about the culture and language of the YK Delta, but will more importantly, develop strategies to leverage this knowledge and the Alaska Cultural Standards to support students and district initiatives in their classroom. Participants will be expected to collaborate with the cohort created through assigned discussion topics. In addition, participants will complete various assignments including reflections, projects and classroom performances to demonstrate competency and to strengthen learning for their students. All badges will include projects and assignments designed to provide demonstration of mastery in a real world setting.

Culture & Language Badge # 1

This will be an entry-level course designed for K-12 teachers to develop their overall knowledge of utilizing appropriate and relevant cultural connections and language to improve teaching through reading, videos, reflection, and assignments. Participants will apply knowledge gained in various classroom scenarios in order to enhance instruction. Teachers will learn about cultural traditions of their community, analyze the value of Alaska’s Cultural Standards, incorporate Alaska’s Cultural Standards into their teaching practices, create, implement, and reflect upon lesson plans based on Alaska’s Cultural Standards, and engage community members for information and classroom instruction.

In this course we will dig deeper to expand on incorporating local ways of knowing and teaching while also focusing on participating in community events and activities in supportive ways to build understanding and connection with local culture. Participants will listen to traditional oral stories and incorporate Yup’ik oral traditions and values into their teaching practice.
