The UFLI resource can be used to provide tier 2 instruction to junior students with lagging skills in word recognition. Based on the Quick Spelling Survey, select the first skill on the survey that needs to be strengthened.
Instruction: Group students together based on the first phonics skill to be strengthened. Use the UFLI lessons that correspond with the phonics skill selected (see UFLI page 40 for the Scope & Sequence).
Small-group instruction is recommended at least once a week until the skill is developed. UFLI lessons are designed to be conducted over two days at 30 minutes each. If you are streamlining those lessons to best meet student needs, the timing may be different.
Note: Not all students will require tier 2, small-group instruction in phonics.
Teachers may choose to complete an additional Quick Spelling Survey for students receiving small-group phonics support at the beginning of term 2.
