"When we teach our students to read, we open windows of opportunity for them. But that can only happen if we consider the needs of all students, keep our expectations high, and provide them with the skills to become literate members of society."
Kemeny, Lindsay (2023). Mighty Moves
Welcome to the LKDSB Literacy Resources website. This website was created to support teachers to use literacy resources and practices in alignment with the revised Language curriculum (2023). The information and understanding of how students progress in their literacy development has been built through the collaborative work of dedicated Lambton Kent classroom educators, Early Literacy Intervention Coaches, Student Support Services/Well-Being and the Speech and Language Department. We hope you find this resource easy to navigate and a useful resource to support your students in their learning journey!
To teach early reading effectively, with the goal of developing proficient and fluent readers, knowledge of the foundational skills for reading, how these skills develop in young children, and how to use evidence-based systematic and explicit instruction to support students is essential.

Scarborough's Reading Rope
Scarborough’s Reading Rope is a model that shows how different skills work together to make someone a proficient reader. It has two main parts: Language Comprehension and Word Recognition. Each part has smaller strands representing specific reading skills twisted together like a rope to show how they are connected and depend on each other.
Scarborough’s reading rope offers a framework to assess and teach reading. Educators can use the model to identify the strengths and weaknesses of their students in each strand to in turn provide explicit instruction and tiered support. Educators can also use the model to show parents and other stakeholders how complex reading is and what it takes to become a skilled reader.
