The Quick Spelling Survey helps teachers to determine if students can apply phonics patterns in their spelling.
Generally speaking, if a student can spell a word, then they can read the word.
The Quick Spelling Survey can be administered to a whole class at the same time, a small group of students with similar skill sets or one-on-one with a student.
The LKDSB recommends that a Quick Spelling Survey be completed at the beginning of the year for each student in Grades 4, 5 and 6 to help determine students who may have lagging skills in word recognition and determine a starting point for tier 2, small-group instruction if needed.
