The Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum (2020) is a 35-week evidence-based curriculum that uses a scope and sequence to instruct 8 phonemic awareness skills and 2 early literacy skills. Daily, the teacher models explicit and systematic phonological and phonemic awareness lessons in 15 minutes or less.
The Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum focuses on the instruction of the following skills:
35 week curriculum for Tier 1 whole class Junior Kindergarten students.
35 week curriculum for Tier 1 whole class Senior Kindergarten students. Lessons can also be used in small groups or one-on-one to provide Tier 2 phonemic awareness intervention for Kindergarten students who need additional support with targeted skills instruction.
35 week curriculum for Tier 1 whole class Grade 1 and 2 classrooms. Lessons can also be used in small groups or one-on-one to provide Tier 2 phonemic awareness intervention for Grade 1 and Grade 2 students who need additional support with targeted skills instruction.
Each curriculum has a Scope and Sequence that shows the progression of phonological awareness skills that are taught on a weekly basis in each lesson.
Scope and Sequence for Pre-Kindergarten Curriculum
The curriculum provides a weekly overview on each page. For each day of the week, the instructional content is organized in columns. Simply follow the content down the column each day.
It's important to keep daily whole-class lessons within a 15-minute timeframe. If the lesson exceeds this duration, avoid skipping skills. Instead, reduce the word count for each skill while ensuring that all phonemic awareness skills continue to be practiced.
