Phonemic Awareness Assessments, or Heggerty screeners, can be used to monitor student progress in phonological and phonemic awareness skills. The results can be used to plan for whole-class instruction and tiered support.
Each curriculum, Pre-Kindergarten (Junior Kindergarten), Kindergarten (Senior Kindergarten), and Primary (Grades 1 and 2), offer 3 screeners to select from, Form A, B, or C, so screening can take place at multiple points throughout the year.
It is recommended that a Heggerty Screener be completed twice per year for each student, and more often if needed. If a student is proficient on all skills, additional screeners are not necessary.
The attached video (1:25) outlines how to administer the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Assessment and next steps following the results.
