Bridge the Gap is a series of systematic phonemic awareness intervention lessons for students in Grade 2 and above. The lessons can be used for 5-7 minute small group Tier 2 intervention or with individual students who struggle to decode words automatically.

The lessons are not written for Monday to Friday instruction as in the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness curricula. Instead, the curriculum is structured into 3 parts, Phoneme Isolation, Blending and Segmenting, and Phoneme Manipulation. Lessons include explicit instruction in early, basic, and advanced phonemic awareness skills.
When a student requires explicit instruction in multiple skills, ensure they are proficient in early and basic phonemic awareness skills before moving to advanced phonemic awareness skills (phoneme manipulation).
Bridge the Gap is only one piece of literacy intervention and should serve as a warm-up to further reading instruction.
Assess students using the Placement Assessment provided in the book (pages 5 - 12).
Use the scoring guidelines to identify the student's area(s) of need and the corresponding lessons (page 13).
Start with anchor lessons and move to daily lessons.
Focus should be on 2 -3 skills maximum at a time with the lesson lasting no more than 5-7 minutes.
