Flyleaf foundational skills lessons are designed to be delivered daily as whole class instruction. The lessons use decodable books and evidence-based strategies to teach foundational reading skills and comprehension to students in Senior Kindergarten through Grade 3, and beyond for intervention. Flyleaf lessons should take no more than 15 minutes daily in Term 2 of SK and 20-30 minutes daily in Grades 1 to 3.
Phonics instruction is not recommended for Junior Kindergarten students. Junior Kindergarten literacy instruction should focus on phonemic awareness using the Heggerty curriculum.
Flyleaf foundational skills lessons are to be delivered whole class for all SK students beginning in Term 2. Flyleaf phonics instruction should occur for 15 minutes per day, 5 days per week. Begin at Lesson 1 of the Foundational Skills Guide - Emergent Level. Follow the lessons in order as they appear in the guide.
By the end of SK, the goal is to complete lessons 1-14 in the Emergent Reader Series. If lessons 1-14 are completed before the end of the school year, phonics instruction may continue to the end of the Emergent Reader Series.

By the end of Grade 1, the goal is to complete the lessons in the Emergent Reader Series and Reading Series 1.
