The results of the Benchmark Assessment System can be used to determine students' instructional and independent reading levels, recommend a placement level for instruction, identify students for intervention, monitor and report student progress over time, and determine areas for lesson focus.
Refer to The Fountas & Pinnell Literacy Continuum for resources to support reading instruction including recognizing the literacy development of each student and planning differentiated instruction for whole class and tiered intervention.

These twelve categories can be further subdivided into three ways of thinking:
Thinking within the text.
Thinking beyond the text.
Thinking about the text.
