Plan ahead.
Start filling out a college application when you are sure you want to apply to that school. You should discuss your choice with your parent(s) and counselor.
Filling out applications is a detail-oriented process that will take time. Decide when it is best to begin filling out applications based on final campus visits, your schoolwork schedule and other commitments you may have on your schedule.
Stay organized.
Keep a record of the colleges to which you are applying, their respective deadlines, and any special requirements needed (extra letter of recommendation, supplementary application form, and athletic resume.)
Determine which colleges use the Common Application or require other special application forms.
Follow all directions accurately and completely.
Do not leave spaces blank, which should have a response to them. When asked to list activities, colleges are more impressed with listing a few activities, which show depth instead of a long list of activities that seem sporadic.
It is the quality, not the quantity of activities that matters.
Review all short answer responses and essays for typos, grammatical errors, and content.
Spend time writing your personal statement. Remember that although the topic about which you choose to write is important, the main point of the essay is for admissions committees to measure writing ability.
Once you have completed your application, proofread. Ask your teacher, counselor, or parent to review your work.
Determine the college’s standardized testing requirements (ACT/SAT or test optional).
Pay close attention to deadlines.
Once you submit your application it can take several days or weeks for them to confirm receipt of all your paperwork before it is evaluated.
Avoid sending your application last minute to avoid making mistakes.
Remember that other individuals such as your counselor, counseling/administrative staff, and teachers are all submitting important documents for you and that they should be given advanced notice.
Communicate with your School Counselor.
It is crucial that you keep your counselor informed throughout this process. The LHS School Counseling Department is your resource to guide you through the entire application process and your senior year.
Take advantage of meeting with Ms. Rothman!
Students are encouraged to attend workshops as well as attend and request individual meetings with Ms. Rothman in the summer and throughout the fall for additional and enhanced support in completing applications.
