10th grade is an important year: a year of exploration. Reflect on your 9th grade experience: What was great? What are you left wishing you may have tried? What are your interests and strengths? If you have not become involved in extracurricular or co-curricular activities, or within the community, reach out to your School Counselor to discuss your interests and ways in which you can search and find something to become involved in.
Continue to prioritize our goals from 9th grade:
▪️ Allow yourself time for transitions.
10th grade is another new transition and experience in high school. You may be getting involved in new activities, taking a higher rigor of coursework or exploring classes or activities of interest that are new for you.
▪️ Get involved. This can be in school or in your community!
▪️ Continue to maintain BALANCE between academics, extracurriculars, social life and home life.
Students need to have a healthy, balanced life in order to not only maintain success, but also find fulfillment and gratitude. All of these factors are essential and contribute to your post-secondary process and your future educational and career experiences. The LPS Portrait of a Graduate guides this important value of being a Balanced Individual:
▪️ Plan ahead.
You won't have all of high school planned out just yet, and that is ok. Think ahead, and allow your plans to change as you continue to explore. That means you are doing the work along the way!
▪️ Begin to explore post-secondary options.
Use this as an exploratory time. You do not yet have all of the information you need to make informed decisions (such as your college admissions test scores and your GPA), however, you can begin to explore other factors of interest and values that are important to you and your family. If you are not ready to think about this, that is completely fine and also typical. Many students are not yet thinking about specific post-secondary programs to explore.

Students are encouraged to start engaging in the post-secondary planning process in 10th grade. Below is an outline of the most important and essential steps for you to take:
Engage in conversations at home, with your School Counselor, with coaches, friends and other trusted individuals in your life about your post-secondary planning aspirations. Consider all post-secondary options and what is the right fit for you:
1. Be mindful and reflect upon your 10th grade schedule. Consider your balance or rigor, strengths and interests. Review and utilize the LHS Course Guide and LHS Scheduling Center. Focus on your academics. Continue to dedicate yourself to your studies, seek help if/when needed and strive for consistent improvement. Pro tip: the students in college who tend to get the highest grades in the hardest classes, are the students who utilize tutoring and office hours of their teachers/professors early on, even before they may need help. Take this proactive approach to your education this year.
2. 10th graders can take the PSAT/NMSQT in the Fall at LHS, which is offered annually for 10th and 11th graders. Scores are typically available in November for students to review your score report. Utilize resources from your PSAT/NMSQT test to practice, as well as information and resources we have on our Admissions Testing page of the LHS College Counseling website.
3. Log back into Naviance! Feel free to do some exploration in Naviance by clicking on the "Self-Discovery" tab. Consider taking any of the available inventories. Watch our short Naviance 101 screencasts (located below) as a starting point!
4. Counselors will conduct a 10th grade classroom lesson in the Spring focusing on Career Exploration. Exploring careers is an integral part of overall post-secondary planning and an important factor in your decision making about colleges, majors, and future career(s).
5. Attend our 10th grade evening presentation and explore the slides and resources as a family in greater detail following our program.
6. Meet with your school counselor to make 11th grade course selections. Update your LPS Personalized Learning Plan PRIOR to your scheduling meeting. Search in your Google Drive for: “LPS Personalized Learning Plan [YOUR NAME]” (it was shared with you previously).
7. Attend the LHS College & Career Fair in April! Additional local and online fairs will be emailed to students and parents. Keep an eye out in your email.
8. Spend time exploring the LHS College Counseling website.
9. Develop summer plans. These may include community service, employment, internships, academic or enrichment opportunities. Explore the LPS Virtual Job Board, summer programs and other opportunities webpages.
10. Review your final grades, course selections for 11th grade, and LHS scheduling policies and procedures (outlined in the LHS Course Guide and included on the Scheduling Center website) as it relates to your next year course requests. Complete summer assignments for 11th grade classes and anticipate communication for October PSAT/NMSQT registration if you plan to take it again as an 11th grader. It is in 11th grade when students become eligible for National Merit Scholarship competition through their PSAT/NMSQT score.
