Social-emotional learning (SEL) is the process of developing the self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills that are vital for school, work, and life success. In first grade, we use both the HEART program and Second Step to help students gain these important life skills.
The HEART program is an important part of our school culture. It addresses the following social skills:
H - Honesty
E - Effort
A -Acceptance
R - Respect
T - Take responsibility
Second Step is our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program. First graders learn skills such as knowing how to calm down, focus, get along with others, and learn how to problem solve. The lessons are fun with colorful materials, songs and videos, role plays and puppets.
