In 2013 we set out in two groups. Scott and one group of students struck out first landing in Copenhagen, then traveling by train to Stockholm spending about a week at each location plus a quick day trip to Helsinki. Highlights of this portion of the trip were dancing around the Maypole in Stockholm at their midsummer festival, touring the harbor area in Stockholm and the National Museum in Copenhagen.
We then traveled by train to Oslo and then Lillihamer where we met of with a second group from LBCC who flew directly to Oslo. In Lillihamer we were greeted by our Norwegian hosts who whisked us a away to a remote conference center nestled among the lakes, goats and trolls that inhabit the region. Here we participated in the 16th Symposium for Peace Justice and Human Rights with an emphasis on global connections. Participants included students from a dozen nations their faculty as well as a guest speaker from Palestine. Scott ran a seminar in environmental justice with an eye on the role of international development agencies and corporations. We studied the effects of the Belo Monte Dam in Brazil as well as the proposed Pebble Mine in Alaska and the potential impacts on indigenous populations.
