SOME NEWS ON “VALLO DI ADRIANO”
The “Vallo di Adriano”, two thousand years after its construction, has found an enemy that it had never faced in its history: climate change. In fact archaeologists have stated that the rise in temperatures will ensure (and even now we can feel the first signs) that the earth overheats more than air. This will result in the sinking of the wall, which will open cracks from which oxygen will enter spaces that for centuries have remained isolated.
Today, the “Vallo di Adriano” is one of the main trekking routes. His initial goal was to put a barrier between two civilizations, one crude and barbaric, another advanced: now it is one of the landmarks of the United Kingdom, which manages to unite all the inhabitants of the island.
TREKKING ON “VALLO DI ADRIANO”:
The Northumberland National Park, in the village of Haringey, near London, includes one of the many protected areas of the United Kingdom. In this park we can find many paths on which to walk, among which the path along the Vallo di Adriano. This trail is called “Hadrian’s Wall Path” and its length exceeds that of the wall itself: 135 km. It takes about 7 days to walk from Bowness-on-Solway to Newcastle, but you can also follow only a part of it to enjoy the beautiful landscape of the park of Northumberland. Along the way, there is also a bus line called AD122 and many guide companies, which organize walking trips along the Wall, carry the luggage of the visitor from one stage to another to make his journey more comfortable.

POLITICAL MEANING:
Emperor Hadrian, with the construction of the wall, decided to prefer a defensive foreign policy, not preferring an expansive one, therefore to create or strengthen the already existing borders, since the Romans were undergoing numerous pressures from neighboring populations (this idea of politics followed one another with Antonino Pio). It was a source of pride and recognition for the Romans. But it was also a symbol of strength and domination towards the local people, both for the Roman population and for the Emperor himself. In this way, it also became a symbol of the political power that the Roman Empire exercised on the surrounding territory.
THE WALL AND TODAY’S CULTURE
There have been mentions of “Vallo di Adriano” in books and also appearances in films. In the series of fantasy novels "Chronicles of the Ice of Fire" and therefore also in the adaptation Game of Thrones, the writer George R.R. Martin, said he was inspired by the "Barrier", an imaginary fortification, to the Roman border. In filmography it appeared in the film "The Eagle" which talks about a Roman legionary who must go into the lands of the barbarians to recover an imperial golden eagle. He appeared also in the film "King Arthur" which deals with the exploitation of King Arthur, inspired by the 15th novel "The Death of Arthur"; "Centurion" which is based on the mysterious disappearance of the Ninth Roman Legion and finally in "The Last Legion", which exposes the end of the Roman Empire occurred in 476 A.D. and the birth of King Arthur.
