What we're learning:
These are the general topics that we will be covering this week.
CKLA Unit 5: Geology
This unit focuses on Earth science — specifically how the planet is put together and what forces shape its surface. Students learn key concepts about the structure of the Earth, what causes changes like earthquakes and volcanoes, and how rocks and landscapes form and evolve over time.
The layers of the Earth (crust, mantle, core) and how heat and pressure work beneath the surface.
The theory of plate tectonics — how plates move and create mountains, trenches, volcanoes, and earthquakes.
The rock cycle and the three main types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.
Processes like weathering and erosion that slowly change Earth’s surface.
What we're doing:
These are some of the assignments of which you should be aware this week.
Read and discuss informational texts about Earth science
Build academic vocabulary related to geology
Participate in class discussions and hands-on demonstrations (such as modeling Earth’s layers or showing how erosion works)
Complete activity pages to reinforce key concepts
Write informational paragraphs or short reports about topics like volcanoes or types of rocks
This unit strengthens both science understanding and literacy skills by combining content learning with reading and writing practice.
Reading Passage review and practice a few times a week in order to work on test taking strategies and stamina.
CKLA UNIT ASSESSMENT: Review and test thr week of March 30- April 2
**Reading logs should be filled out each night Monday - Thursday and turned in on Fridays.**
Keeping the End in Mind:
At LCA, we're always thinking about how our lessons lead to human flourishing. For each lesson, we have Big Ideas and Essential Questions in mind.
Big Ideas
Earth is made up of distinct layers, each with unique characteristics and roles.
Earth’s surface is constantly changing due to both slow processes (weathering and erosion) and rapid events (earthquakes and volcanoes).
The movement of tectonic plates shapes landforms such as mountains, valleys, and ocean trenches.
Rocks are constantly changing through the rock cycle.
Scientists study Earth’s features and processes to better understand how our planet works.
Essential Questions
What is inside the Earth, and how do we know?
How do tectonic plates change Earth’s surface?
What causes earthquakes and volcanoes?
How do weathering and erosion shape the land over time?
How do rocks change from one type to another?
Why is it important to study Earth’s processes?
