We are finishing up our unit on the American Civil War.

We will be finishing up our record books, reviewing, and having our test about halfway through the week. This is the heaviest topic we have covered this year - I would encourage talking with your child about what they are learning and encourage discussion.

At LCA, we're always thinking about how our lessons lead to human flourishing. For each lesson, we have Big Ideas and Essential Questions in mind.
When learning to read, it is extremely important to learn to comprehend what you are reading as well. First, having background knowledge on what you are reading is helpful when trying to increase reading comprehension skills. It also helps support other subjects, like math and science. This is the focus in CKLA knowledge.

We are currently in unit 3, using our class book titled “kids excel,” which focuses on stories of kids that are good at something! We are learning about long vs short vowel sounds and how to differentiate them as well.

We are finishing up our personal narratives, as well as the unit! We do not have new spelling words, but we will be taking a few other assessments near the end of the week. If your child is retaking a spelling test, it will be those days as well!

Not only is the foundation of reading on of the main requirements in society, but we are also beginning to incorporate more advanced writing skills as well.

We will occasionally talk about Dr. Looney’s question to the school every morning. February's virtue is Citizenship. Not only this, but character conversations are sprinkled throughout the days in class when relevant - either to the subject or a class situation.

While this one may be more passive, handwriting and other moments are wonderful opportunities for self reflection.

When we come to school every day, it is important to learn the academic side of the world. However, creating good character is just as important - if not moreso.

We are continuing on with our handwriting worksheets. I have also bought everyone a composition book so have a "journal" in, which I had mentioned wanting to do a few months ago.

Good handwriting is crucial when becoming a part of society. Without legible handwriting, written communication becomes much more difficult.

We will be learning about ordering and organizing numbers into charts and graphs, as well as adding nickels to our coin knowledge!

Normal homework will be going home, and we should be having a fact quiz in the middle of the week.

Knowing numerical values and being able to execute simple addition is one of the very first building blocks to knowing higher math. This, as well as knowing your left from right, are some of the basic building blocks to make your way in society - without needing a helping hand or calculator.

Grammar is especially important in the future when it comes to students becoming professionally fluent. In fact, we have already covered that most "bosses" are (or should be) required to have good grammar.
