Welcome

EYFS Spotlight is a way of highlighting the many varied resources that LGfL offers to help your Early Years Foundation Stage setting by providing topic maps and planning. This resource aims to filter the extensive collection of LGfL content into popular EYFS themes / topics. The resource is ideal for use in primary schools and Early Years settings.

Within each category below you’ll find a variety of links to LGfL resources and suggested teaching ideas on how to use them within your Early Years setting. As some settings may have variations in naming of topics, please see the topic descriptions to help you search for the related content.

Growth

This topic covers human growth, links to healthy eating and healthy practices, and can also extend to animal, insect, plant and underwater growth.

Animals

This topic covers animal life cycles, local or farm animals, wild animals, pets and caring for animals, sorting and classifying animals and also explores various traditional animal tales.

Minibeasts

This topic covers minibeast life cycles, exploring and caring for the environment, plenty of counting and sequencing activities as well as exploring various traditional minibeast tales.

Superheroes

This topic covers story sequencing and structure and retelling, creating superheroes, staying healthy and explores how to help others as a community hero.

Home

This topic covers making connections with the local area, talking about directions, exploring maps of the local community and the wider area.

Fairy Tales

This topic covers story sequencing and structure, retelling and creating traditional tales as well as looking at real life royalty.

Weather

This topic is all about different types of weather and exploring them with all of our senses! In addition, we look at traditional weather rhymes and songs and explore the seasonal changes that occur during the four seasons.

All About Me

This topic explores human growth, names and parts of the human body, key relationships such as family and friends, children’s interests and their likes and dislikes.

Food

This topic is all about food. Children will explore different foods, cook different kinds of food and watch how it changes during cooking, make food pictures, talk about where food comes from and grow their own food.

Toys

This topic focuses on learning about toys and games. Students will find out about toys and games from the past, about 'magic' toys, how to sort toys based on what they are made of and about how different toys move.

Dinosaurs

This topic explores the concept of dinosaurs, how big there were, how we know what they looked like and what they ate.

Bears

This topic is all about bears. We will look at traditional tales with bears as characters, explore toy teddy bears, use sorting bears and arranging bears according to size and finally look at real bears.

Shopping

This topic explores shopping; different types of shops, the concept of buying things and money, as well as exploring the local area.
