Studio (Foundational) Art Courses
Before advancing to higher levels, students are required to complete at least ONE studio-level art course, which serves as a prerequisite for advanced studies. These introduction classes, which are mandatory for progressing further, accommodate students in grades 9-12 and provide a comprehensive learning environment suitable for artists of varying skill levels.

2D Art introduces principles of art and design with a focus on two-dimensional art forms. This course emphasizes the exploration of composition, line, shape, color, and texture through various mediums like pencil, ink, paint, collage, printmaking, and mixed media. Students are encouraged to express themselves through both traditional and innovative techniques and approaches to art making. Through hands-on studio sessions, students will engage in projects aimed at honing their skills in planning, sketching, and executing original artworks. Alongside technical proficiency, this course fosters an understanding of conceptual and expressive approaches within two-dimensional art forms.

3D art is a course exploring the artistic potential of form and space, concentrating on 3-D design principles. Students will use a variety of materials, such as wire, clay, cardboard and papier-mâché. Student’s self-expression will be encouraged through exploration of traditional and nontraditional approaches to sculpture. This hands-on studio course focuses on sculptural object making, using a variety of media to plan, prototype, and produce projects. In addition to this practical knowledge, students gain an understanding of conceptual and expressive practices.

This course provides an introduction to the principles of typography, color theory, and layout as well as the theories behind effective visual messaging. Through the use of design software including Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, students will demonstrate an understanding of industry standards, while producing personal work that expresses their individual and creative voice. Throughout the semester students will add their completed work to an online digital portfolio, which can be used for future art classes at LHS and beyond.

Moving Image Studio is an introductory course that teaches students the fundamentals of visual storytelling through film, photography, and animation. Students will focus on mastering composition and understanding how it is used across various mediums, applying this knowledge to their work. The course will guide students in telling compelling stories, teaching them how to frame shots, convey emotions, and capture moments that resonate with viewers. In Moving Image Studio, students will explore the art of visual storytelling, first through photography and later through film. Students will dive into editing techniques and learn how to curate their work to create cohesive and engaging narratives. By the end of the course, students will have the skills to produce short films, public service announcements, photo essays, and more.
Our course begins with photography as a powerful storytelling tool, focusing on still images and sequencing. Later in the course, the focus will shift to moving images and short films. Students will also gain an understanding of the history of photography and storytelling, exploring its many contexts—from art and social media to its role as a historical document.
