Prerequisite: Any of the four Studio Art courses, Graphic Design Studio is recommended.
Design: Culture and Media explores the intersection of art history, visual culture, and their pivotal roles in shaping and reflecting social change. Participants will examine the relationship between societal values, norms, and their representation in art and design, from ancient artifacts to contemporary media. By engaging with diverse visual mediums, students will dissect how these visual representations influence cultural narratives and shape our understanding of the world. This class will introduce students to the core principles of visual communication, using Graphic Design to create and understand culture. In addition, the course introduces the core principles of graphic design, focusing on symbols, culture, audience, and impact. Through hands-on projects using industry-standard design software like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, students will develop technical skills and messaging strategies while expressing their unique artistic voices.
