Prerequisite: Any of the four Studio Art courses, Studio - Moving Image is strongly recommended.
Animation serves as an in-depth introduction to the 12 principles of animation and how to apply them creatively. In this course, you’ll explore a range of animation techniques—from digitally hand-drawn effects and frame-by-frame movement to character design and rigging—gaining exposure to key departments within animation and UX design studios. Students will dive into the fundamentals and mechanics of movement, with a strong focus on mastering the 12 principles of animation. Beyond technical skills, the course broadens to examine representation and audience, helping students understand animation’s role in contemporary visual storytelling. Through a project-based approach, you’ll engage in multiple assignments that emphasize collaboration, and the animation studio pipeline.
GOALS
Learn and use the principles of animation
Develop a vocabulary for animation
Develop drawing skills with the purpose of storyboarding, in order to communicate concepts, scenes, and a visual narrative
Evaluate personal work and critique the work of others constructively
Learn and develop technical skills in Abode Animate or similar animation software
Learn collaboration skills needed to work on team projects.
