Review "Nixon, Watergate, and Carter" (Chap. 27)
Persuasive Essay. Choose an issue from American history, Chap. 20-27 (World War I - 1970s). Choose one side of your issue (your thesis) and prepare facts to support your opinion. You should identify a bare minimum of three proofs for your thesis and three subproofs to support each proof. Also prepare at least two proofs to support the counter-thesis and three pieces of evidence to support each of those proofs. Supply refutations of the counter-proofs. Only an outline of this preparatory work on the body of the essay is due on Tuesday. You will have to do outside research to write this essay; please cite your sources. All drafts of this essay should be handwritten. Next week you will work on an outline and a rough draft. The final draft will be due on Tuesday, May 16.

Using the model on pp. 93-95 practice finding information using the topic of testimony. Add information to your ANI chart. You should also be using comparison, definition, relation, and circumstance to come up with something to say.

Add anything you learn about your issue to your ANI chart in the I column. You can move information over to the A or N column as you find a use for it.

1) Essay 5: Invention. Revise the ANI chart you handed in this week. Make sure your issue comes from a specific story. Cite the chapter and verse of Acts you are writing about. Your goal is to have thirty entries per column on your ANI chart, but that is not a fixed rule. Strive to get as much information as possible so you have a lot of options when you are identifying proofs and subproofs. Remember to use comparison and definition (and any of the other Common Topics) to add to your ANI chart. Email me if you have questions!
2) Create a sample division section you might use in this essay. Choose a hypothetical thesis, identify the counter-thesis. Follow the steps to creating Division on pp. 53-54 in your writing book. Write a sample template of your Introduction only showing where your Division goes (see p. 58). Please turn in your work creating the division and your template of the Introduction.

1) Essay 5: Invention. Pick an issue from the Book of Acts and create an ANI chart. Your goal is to have thirty entries per column on your ANI chart. Remember to use not only characters and actions but also the Common Topics to come up with these entries. Write the chapter and verses to which you are referring in parentheses at the end of your issue.
2) Pick a term from the issue above and practice the skill of creating a definition. There is a model of creating a definition on p. 51 in your book. Do your work on notebook paper, but follow the steps outlined on p. 51. Add any information that you glean from thinking about your term to your ANI chart.

Use the study guide to prepare for the Chap. 12-14 test which will be Wed., Jan. 18. Prepare an outline for the in-class test essay identifying at least three causes of the War Between the States. Identify three issues that divided the North from the South, discuss them (i.e. explain why the South insisted the North planned to eliminate slavery when Lincoln said he did not intend to do that), and explain why the South was not able to leave the Union peaceably. The outline will help you organize your thoughts, but you will not be allowed to use your outline as you take the test. Jan. 19 we will begin Chap. 15 "Reconstruction."

Essay 2: Arrangement
1) Review the Common Topics on p. 9 in your writing book. Remember "Topic" comes from the Greek word "topos" which is a place. You are using the common topics to go to different places in your brain to find information.
2) Revisit the Nun's Priest's Tale, The Canterbury Tales, pp. 26-32.
3) Using the Common Topics and the actions and words of the characters in the tale, add at least five entries to each column of your ANI chart. Remember you will sort your ANI chart, so you will want to space it well to allow for symbols and headings.
4) Review "A Guide to Sorting" on p. 10. Make sure you understand the steps.
5) Use the N column of the ANI chart we sorted in class to create a chart of proofs and subproofs. Circle the three most compelling groups.

1) Complete a rough draft of your essay due Oct. 25. Remember, the point of your essay is to discuss how your chosen Patriot contributed to the founding of the nation. Some of you are digressing into such things as feminism. Your essay will be judged for historical accuracy, organization of materials, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and the quality and scope of references, particularly the use of original sources. From what I saw of your outlines, many of you seem to be depending on an encyclopedia or wikipedia. Please branch out and explore new sources! Your local library is a great resource for that. You may find you enjoy research! You will not turn this rough draft in as I may not comment on your work in progress. I will check to see if you have it and give a completion grade. The final essay should be 800-1200 words total.
2) Read Chap. 6, pp. 113-135. For each section headed in red print, write an outline of the main points. Please submit the outline as proof you read the text. These are notes to help you master the material and will be returned to you.

8th Grade Writing and Grammar:
1) Essay 1: Elocution. Write the essay following Template 1, p. 6. Checklist, p. 108. Remember to double-space your writing whether you are typing or handwriting the essay. Paragraphs should be indented. There is a model essay on p. 118. If written correctly, your essay will sound very repetitive. No worries! We will move beyond this stage quickly.
2) Reminder: You need to start a Commonplace Book if you have not already. I will soon be asking you to share a quotation.
3) Grammar: Chap. 1, Lesson 9, Written Ex. A, B, and C and Review Ex. A, B, pp. 48-49. Omit Review Ex. A, #3 and Review Ex. B, #5 as they contain objective complements which we have not studied.
U. S. History
1) Choose a Revolutionary War patriot that you would like to learn more about. The patriot may be a man, woman, or child, famous or not famous. This might be a great time to delve into your own family history! I know of at least three Revolutionary War soldiers in my family.
2) Do research (not Wikipedia) and find a minimum of three interesting facts about your patriot that you might include in your essay. The public library is a resource I would like to see you tap. Remember that original documents (letters, wills, etc.) are your best historical sources. A good librarian can help you find internet sources for those original documents.
3) Turn in the name you have chosen with the three facts you have found on Tues., Oct. 4.
4) 800-1200 word essay is due Tues., Oct. 25.
Week 3: (Sept. 22-28)
Wheelock's A:
1) Review Chap. 1 vocabulary
2) Study Chap. 2 vocabulary, pp. 17-18 (vocabulary quiz Tues., Sept. 27)
3) Read pp. 12-14 in the textbook.
4) Review the case endings for a first declension noun (pp. 14-15).
5) Choose three nouns from the Chap. 2 vocabulary list and decline each one. The root to which you will add endings is found by dropping the genitive singular ending, e.g. rosae - ae = ros. Write the translation for each case. (See the translations of porta on pp. 14-15 as a model.)

1) Choose an issue from "The Knight's Tale" (whether _____ should have _____)
2) Using the character/action list you completed for "The Knight's Tale" and any of the Common Topics, complete an ANI chart on notebook paper for your issue (sample: writing book, p. 3. and notes). You must have at least five entries per column.
3) On notebook paper, work through the order of preparation, pp. 4-5 in your writing book (do not write in the book).
4) After you have completed the order of preparation, complete an outline based on the model on p. 6. If you have forgotten what any terms mean, check your glossary of terms, pp. 131-135.

Compose three "should" questions to ask about the text.
Change one of the "should" questions into a "whether" statement (an issue)

U. S. History
Write a persuasive essay on the issue "whether the Europeans should have settled the Americas". Please follow the outline for a persuasive essay handed out in class today. You may use your book and your notes as your sole sources. If you would like to do outside research, please use reputable sources, not just someone ranting on the internet. I expect the MLA format whether you type or handwrite your essay.

1) Write a one-page persuasive essay on any topic. You are not limited to this list.
2) Grammar: Chap. 1, Lesson 3. Written Ex. A, B, pp. 24-25 and Review Ex. A, B, pp. 25-26. Please check your work with the Teacher's Edition and mark anything that you miss with a colored pen. Do not erase and correct.

Wheelock's A: Write 3-5 study practices you think will help you learn Latin. Write a short introduction for me. Tell me about your family, where you live, what you enjoy. Be sure to tell me your birthday.
8th Grade Writing and Grammar: Observe how writing is used at home, in stores, at church, with your friends. Write a well-developed paragraph detailing three ways that you observed writing being used. Describe why some writing was more meaningful than other writing. (Think about the difference between a poem and a text.)
U. S. History: Ask family members what part your ancestors played in the formation of our country. Please come to class prepared to share this information.
