The Female Paul Revere

by Kai Gajilan Fowler - Grade 5

Most of you know about the heroic Paul Revere who rode 20 miles to warn two men. He had much experience in riding and had military background, he was also a middle aged man who was having a nice ride in sunny conditions. Nowadays he is famous for that, but if there were someone else to compare him to would things be different? Well there is someone to compare him to. Sybil Ludington, a child of a military officer Henry Ludington, and a silent wife. One day, in the middle of the American Revolutionary War, a messenger came knocking on their door, about an attack planned by the British. They needed someone, fast, and brave to warn the volunteer soldiers across the countryside. Sybil volunteered to complete the task. Alone, with no military background on a rainy day-no one would have guessed that a 16 year old would be able to ride 40 miles and alert hundreds of men. Even though the battle was not one, her bravery symbolizes the same love, power, and hope that lead the way through the Revolution, and into a new era.

That Smiling Tree

by Kai Gajilan Fowler - Grade 5

We moved to town, just last Wednesday.. The house was small and lonely. Except for that tree.

That tree.

That smiling tree.

With swinging branches, and woozy leaves.

Birdies nesting, and colors red-Like Anne of Cleves

I could see it from my birds eye view window

That smiling tree

With its gnarled roots reaching out to me.

Climbing branches, and twigs reaching for the sun.

That smiling tree.

Just for me.

Spring

by Kai Gajilan Fowler - Grade 5

Spring?

What is spring?

Is it the season where flowers bloom, and bees buzz?

Is it the bubbling water over rocks in the mountains?

Is it the water bottle company that always uses the name Poland?

Is it the metal that makes pens pop, or the beds bounce? Or is it, could it possibly be?

All of those things together,

Creating a sort of sentimental tether,

Forever. . .

Spring.

Poem from the book Sophia’s War

by Sophia Jorge - Grade 7

Built on love, ends in betrayal - neither are prepared for the

Events that pull them apart

They separate for years never seeing each other - not knowing when they will be together

Running so far away not knowing where there’ll end

Always finding their way back to each other

Yearning for Andre’s approval hoping she would get it

All comes to a stop as she watches the life fade from Andre knowing that

Love will fill the air as Sophia places the flower down, knowing it is the end.

Respect

by Amogh Padwal - Grade 8

Without respect, life is so much harder. Respect is one of the few things that have to be earned on its own in this world. Respect cannot be bought with money. The best way to achieve respect in my opinion would be to treat people kindly and not to be rude to them. Earning respect is something that takes time and a lot of patience. It is also difficult to achieve but to be respected is to be acknowledged. If you are not acknowledged then you are not a significant person. When you want to earn respect you have to be a kind person.

I once had a teacher who I always said good morning to. She never really replied, but by second half of the yearn if I forgot to say it, she reminded me. I had earned her respect. This is what it means to earn respect if you are a kind person. Just act properly and it should come easily.
