Who was Martin Luther King?

by Sophia Jorge - Grade 7

Martin Luther King is an activist. He was born on January 15, 1929. Martin Luther king was known for his nonviolent fight to achieve equal rights for Black Americans. He wanted to make people see that everyone is the same and should be treated equally and not based on the color of their skin. He died because of this belief. He was assassinated on  April 4, 1968. Martin Luther king is now famous for his most known speech called “I have a Dream.” This speech was to influence the Federal government to take more direct actions to fully realize racial equality. His dream was to make the world equal and he improved that by making this speech. For example, back in 1940s African Americans had to ride in the back of the bus, drink from different water fountains and go to differents school as  kids with white skin. These acts inspired Martin Luther King to make a stand and fight for equal rights. Even today, we celebrate Martin Luther King and his courage for equal rights for Black Americans on January 16 every year.

Something related to Martin Luther King is Black History month. People around the world celebrate Black history month all throughout the month of February. This celebration is celebrated to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. For example, on that month we celebrate Martin Luther King because of his achievements.  He fought for equal rights between people with color. Even now, with him gone everyone still remembers the fight he made for African Americans even if it caused him his life.

Emperor Claudius ll banned marriage between people in rome. One priest, Saint Valentine, allowed marriage in secret in his church until Emperor Claudius found out, so he threw him in jail. When he was in jail, he fell in love with the Emperor’s daughter, and wrote a love letter to her, before the execution on Feb. 14

They share romantic relationships, admiration, and friendship on this day.

From this day, many people celebrate by giving each other love cards or love letters, gifts, chocolate (hearts are popular decorations and formats) or have dinner in restaurants.

*Chinese Story* Nian was a creature who came to the village, and each night he ate them one by one. The villagers had enough of this, so they dressed in red, and had so many colorful lanterns in the town, and loud noises because they knew nian were afraid of these. He was chased away, and never seen again. Until this day, chinese celebrate by wearing red hanfus (sort of like korean hanbok) with red bright lanterns in their houses, and cleaning their houses for good luck.

In America, people celebrate by having a big ball drop down at midnight, and not sleeping until then, and eating steak string beans.
