TOPIC - TOYS
What a fabulous start to Year 1. The children have settled in brilliantly and we are really impressed with how well they've settled in and they should be proud of all the wonderful learning they have done.
In English, all of our learning begins with a focus on a story. We have read three lovely books so far that all tie in with our theme of toys: Paper Dolls, Lost in the Toy Museum and Traction Man. The children have been working on sentence formation, thinking about sentence punctuation and the components of sentences using colourful semantics and remembering to use their full stop, capital letters and finger spaces. We have looked at what verbs, nouns and adjectives are, and how these can be used in a sentence.
In Maths, we have been sequencing days of the week, practising writing our numbers, using part part whole models, comparing numbers and comparing the mass of different objects.
In Science we have been learning about the seasons and how these change throughout the year. We have been looking at pictograms and how these can be used to compare the daylight hours in different seasons. We have looked at how we dress differently in different seasons and the weather changes that occur.
In History, we have been learning about toys from the past and thinking about the similarities and differences between toys we play with now and the toys are parents and grandparents played with. We were lucky enough to have a toy workshop at the school and it was lovely to see the children getting the opportunity to play with a range of toys from the past and thoroughly entertaining themselves with flip books, wooden horses and old fashioned toy sewing machines! It was a wonderful day and I hope your children told you all about it.
We have also been very lucky this term with the visitors that we have had in school as the children have taken part in forest school on a weekly basis and they have also had art lessons led by Art K. In forest school, the children have been on bug hunts, made conker necklaces and have had the chance to explore the world around them through play. In the lessons led by Art K they have been busy practising their drawing and observational skills and have enjoyed unleashing their creativity using stories as inspiration.
Overall, it has been a great start to the year and we hope you enjoy looking through some of the photos below that show what we have been up to in class.
We hope the children enjoy a bit of a rest over half term and we look forward to welcoming them back in November.
