We've had another busy and productive few weeks in Year 5! It's hard to believe how quickly this half term is flying by.
In the past few weeks the children have been singing, using generative AI and spending the day as Historical Amazing People.
The absolute highlight was undoubtedly our "Historical Amazing People" Dress Up Day! It was truly phenomenal to see the effort and imagination that went into the costumes. Our classrooms were transformed into a living history museum, with Spartacus leading the charge, Einstein pondering the universe, Boudica rallying her troops, Aristotle dispensing wisdom, and Queen Victoria presiding with regal authority, among many other incredible historical figures. The children shared fascinating facts about their chosen person, and their confidence in presenting was simply brilliant. Thank you so much for your support in making this such a memorable and educational experience for everyone!
A huge thank you goes out to Esther Jones, who leads the Ashtead Youth Choir, for a truly memorable morning of Outdoor Singing! The children absolutely loved her engaging singing games and activities. It was wonderful to see them applying their musical skills, focusing on pitch and tempo, while enjoying the fresh air. They all took part with such enthusiasm, and their voices sounded fantastic ringing through the playground!
The children are becoming increasingly proficient in using this fantastic tool for immediate feedback on their writing.
The process is incredibly engaging: a child photographs their handwritten work, OLEX.AI then reads and converts this into typed text.
The programme then marks the writing against various features, providing valuable insights into areas like grammar, spelling, and sentence structure.
But the fun doesn't stop there! For a truly creative twist, the AI then generates a character based on the written description provided by the children. This has led to some brilliant discussions, as the children always have a strong opinion about the AI-generated character. This immediate visual feedback is a powerful way for them to reflect on their descriptive skills and understand how their words translate into an image. It's been fascinating to witness their critical thinking develop as they refine their descriptions to match their imaginative visions!
We've just embarked on our exciting new Geography topic: Deserts! The children have been engaged in sorting and classifying different biomes around the world, discussing their unique climates, and considering the challenges and adaptations of life in these diverse environments. We've had some really thought-provoking discussions about whether we would like to live in a desert and what that would entail.
We are busily rehearsing for the production of "Pirates of the Curry Bean!"
Mark your calendars! The performance dates are Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th of July. We can't wait to see you all there to witness their hard work come to life. We know you will be in for a ship-shape time!
