TOPIC - WHERE DO I LIVE?
In English we've been immersed in the delightful world of 'The Jolly Postman', exploring the art of letter writing through this classic book. The class planned a birthday party and wrote a letter to a friend, inviting them to the celebration. It was lovely to watch the children's imaginations soar as they carefully planned their dream parties! This activity not only gave them a chance to practise their persuasive writing skills but also provided the opportunity for the children to use lots of descriptive language.
In our Maths lessons the children have started looking at time: learning to read clocks and understanding the sequence of months and days of the week. We have also been looking at direction and position.
In History we have been looking at events in our own life and how we make history. We placed significant events from our life on a timeline, thought about how we celebrated birthdays and then we learnt about childhood in the 1960s - the children even got to quiz a member of staff about their childhood. We then compared childhood now and in the past and thought about what was similar and what was different. We have also been learning about some famous historical figures and it was lovely to see so many of the children dressed up on our Amazing People dress up day!
We have just started our Geography by thinking about the difference between human and physical features and over the next half term will be focusing on what it is like to live in Shanghai and comparing that to life in Ashtead.
The children have also been having a lot of fun learning about the piece of music 'Nautilus' by the composer Anna Meredith. They responded to the music creatively through drawing and then watched lots of different performances/ interpretations of the same piece and decided which one was their favourite: the class overwhelmingly enjoyed the response to the piece performed by the Scottish ballet troupe Tremble - I think it was the jelly!
Our Science lessons have been busy with a fascinating look into the world of plants! We have been keenly observing seeds, making comparisons and noting their unique characteristics; sparking lots of curiosity about the life cycle of plants. We have been considering the differences between evergreen and deciduous trees and the children have enjoyed learning how these trees adapt to the changing seasons.
We have also enjoyed our Grow-Cook-Eat workshop, where the children made delicious bean burgers, after harvesting their vegetable crop which they have grown in sessions over the past year. Using spring onions, potatoes and beans, they worked together to make their burgers. This practical experience provided a wonderful opportunity for the children to understand the connection between plants and the food we eat, highlighting the journey from seed to plate.
