The children in year 4 enjoyed researching, planning and writing their non-chronological reports on Indonesia this week. We were impressed with their use of topic sentences, subordinating conjunctions and relative clauses. In Maths, we continued with geometry, comparing angles and classifying triangles and quadrilaterals.
In English, year 5 have thoroughly enjoyed reading more about Fred, Con, Lila and Max's adventures in the Amazon Rainforest after their traumatic plane crash in 'The Explorer.' Next week, we will be writing diary entries from the perspective of one of these characters. To prepare for this, we have created story maps to help us recount the most significant events. We have also looked at a model text in order to understand the key features of diary writing. In grammar, year 5 have been introduced to the dual purpose of the semi-colon and practised using it to link two related main clauses. In maths, we have concluded our Geometry unit. We learnt that angles in a quadrilateral always total 360 degrees and how to distinguish between regular and irregular polygons.
In Year 4/5, Falcons, Eagles and Hawks have practised paper folding techniques in Art. In history, we continued to use sources to find out about a person who lived in Victorian times. In science we developed our learning about the life cycles of amphibians.
In maths next week, year 4 will begin to look at symmetry, identifying lines of symmetry in 2D shapes and completing symmetrical figures.
In English, year 4 will focus on figurative language, namely metaphors and personification, building up to some narrative writing the following week.
Next week, year 5 will plan, draft and edit their diary entries from the perspective of either Fred, Con or Lila. In maths, we will commence a new unit on the topic of Position & Movement. We will understand how to plot coordinates on a grid as well as how to describe how shapes move (translations) and are reflected on a grid.
In Years 4 and 5 we will be decorating paper in a range of colours and patterns in Art. We will be comparing the life cycles of butterflies and frogs in Science. In history, we will be looking at a local census to find out more about people who lived in Epsom in the past.
