Year 5 have been working extremely hard over the last few weeks. In English, we have written some fantastic narratives based on the next chapter of the book 'Kensuke's Kingdom'. They have been focusing on including features such as expanded noun phrases and adverbials and have created some fantastic stories. In reading. we have been practising our summarising skills and ensuring we have understood the text. We have explored a range of poems for 'National Poetry Day' and even created and performed some of our own.
In maths, we have continued looking at place value and exploring how we round different numbers and what the word approximately means! Year 5 have also moved on to looking at different methods for using addition and subtraction. We have explored methods such as using the column method and using different manipulatives to count up. We are looking forward to exploring the different methods used for subtraction and moving on to multiplication and division.
In Science, we made our own parachutes and explored how air resistance changes the rate the parachute falls at. We were able to work in groups and create our own prediction and write up a conclusion based on our findings.
As well as all of the exciting learning in class, some of the Year 5 children were lucky enough to attend a 'Show Racism the Red Card' event at Sutton United. This was a fantastic learning point about equality and diversity in sport. On Tuesday 4th October we had a visit from the Dogs Trust and each class had a workshop discussing how the children could remain safe around dogs. There were fantastic conversations about the different ways we can keep dogs and ourselves safe when we are out in public. We also took part in the Be Internet Legends assembly to learn all about the ways we can stay safe online.
Well done year 5 for another few fantastic weeks, keep up the hard work!
